My name is Colton Ricks, I'm from Parker, CO, and I'm a History Education Major! My favorite scripture in Isaiah 53:3-5, is an RM of the Colorado Fort Collins mission, and is a huge fan of music, sports, and the gospel of Jesus Christ!
This class was class #3 of my education classes I have taken, so it is safe to assume that this class is required for my degree. I didn't really know what to expect going into the class, but from past knowledge of classes I've took I still had no idea what to expect since I never have took a psychology-based course before. Nonetheless, my goal in terms of this class was to help me understand how to help my students in their development, understand their development process, and help overcome barriers that may be present because of them.
Deliverables were a big part of this class, something I had never heard of before this class. Nonetheless, as the semester has gone on, I noticed that deliverable were just lesson plans that helped us see the bigger picture and detail of what we wanted to teach. The first example was the "Health Lesson Plan," our introduction to deliverables. Little did I know that this deliverable would be a great resource to help lead and guide the rest of the deliverable I would create later down the road.
The second deliverable called, "Feelings of First Love" was one that I didn't take too seriously (being the heartbroken knight lol), but it helped me to better understand what the expectations were. As this we being presented, it became very clear that children in a late adolescence setting would need to know the differences between love and lust, and it showed me that children in this developmental stage would need to have serious conversations about this because they are in a vulnerable part of their life when it comes to this. It helped open my eyes on the topic as a whole, and showed that it even applies to people my age.
My third deliverable was entitled "Goal Setting and Self-Regulation." This deliverable was created with the help of my wonderful group that I ended up presenting this exact topic with in March of 2023, and it was eye opening in a lot of ways. Not only did we all have certain ways we thought the class should be taught, but that struggle continued into the deliverable creating process. However, after much labor and pain, we felt like we finally got a narrowed down focus topic, and it allowed the rest of the lesson plan to flow and develop in a way that we were all confident in.
The last three deliverables were ones I created, and showed three different topic areas and interests that I had at the time of creating them. Those deliverables names are "Revolutionary War," "Popular (2010-) Music," and "March Madness." Each of these deliverables showcased a current event or an interest, and applied them in different ways. With Revolutionary, I used my teaching emphasis of History Education to create a lesson plan for an AP US History course. Doing this one was fun because when we think of the first major event in the history of the United States, it points to the Revolutionary War. The end project here was to create a timeline of important events during the war as if this was going to be placed in a history museum, and to use pictures, illustrations, and dates to showcase knowledge of the war. Popular was taxing to make if I'm being honest. Not only was this apart of my old major, but it was hard to come up with a good final project for this topic. But then I remembered a music appreciation class I took with one of the projects being to showcase our knowledge of genres and music, and to showcase different songs and reasons why we liked them. Once I remembered that project, it allowed me to have a base to ground a project for the deliverable on. Madness was the last deliverable I created, and with how March Madness was ongoing, it made it an easy topic to gravitate toward. I ended up using my limited background in math to make the final project be based off of statistics and data, with the final project being the class to fill out a bracket, but by using the data given to them from a season to help them analyze and project what could happen in the tournament, and then be able to give reasons for why they picked the teams they did.
Deliverables became a huge part of learning in this class, and being able to have this new tool to use and to aid me in the future was life changing. It allowed me to see that despite our pre-concieved notions or ideas that we had, there are always more efficent ways to be able to lesson plan and to prepare for a class. Life experience plays a major role in that, and by helping our students through experiences can best help the next generations of learners. The knowledge learned from this class will only help me in the future, and I hope to retain as much information as I can to further progress my career.
