My name is Madison Pickens and I am a 21 year old majoring in Elementary Education with a goal to one day be a kindergarten teacher! This is my first semester at BYU-I and I am from Queen Creek, Arizona. Growing up, I always wanted to be a teacher. I am great with children and enjoy working with them, so I feel like I would make a pretty excellent teacher! By doing my best to cater to all forms of learning, I should be able to have a classroom environment that is fun and makes the kids want to learn. Another thing that I believe is important to have in a classroom is a trusting relationship with my students. I want them to be able to feel comfortable asking questions, talking to me about what they don’t understand, and truly tell me how they’re feeling. I want to build a connection with them that goes deeper than just in class during the week. I want to know about their personal lives and build mutual feelings of respect by also being open to them and sharing things about me with them.
Teaching Philosophy Statement
Education is one of the most important things in this society. Educating children not only secures their personal life but collectively contributes to the development of a more reliable nation and the world. I believe that if children are more educated, they will become better people who can adapt to the ever changing world and can become successful in whatever fields of life they decide to pursue.
In my classroom, I will strive to form personal connections with my students. This means going above and beyond to learn about their situations and their home lives, their hobbies and dislikes, their personal learning styles, and much more. I will develop a classroom environment filled with respect and trust. It will be a judgment-free zone, and while I’m going to be my students’ friends I’m also going to be their advisor and mentor. I will set high standards and high expectations by promoting growth mindsets among my students. All my students will know that I am expecting them to try their hardest and strive for improvement every day. They’ll also know that I love and care about them without any restrictions, and they should feel comfortable with me enough to come to me with their personal struggles.
I will teach in a way that is fun and engaging by using creative lesson plans and interactive group work and projects. I’ll have a variety of ways I’ll present the information, including videos, books, personal experiences and knowledge, websites, and real-world activities. I’ll tailor my assessments to the individual’s needs while teaching to the class as a whole. I will be humble and accept criticism as an opportunity to grow and become a better teacher with each passing day. I promise to be 100% there for my students every single day and give it my all so that they see me as a positive example and follow suit.
Portfolio Planning Guide
Classroom Management Plan
A theory I am a fan of is helping students grow relationships with one another instead of just with me as their teacher. I can do this by putting them in groups, making different seating assignments, or assigning projects. A philosopher who also thinks this is important is John Dewey. He is a strong believer in helping kids develop good judgment, moral knowledge, and social interest by having them work together to accomplish certain tasks during the school day. A second philosopher that I am a fan of is Socrates. He believed that as self-learners we must first admit to our ignorance and realize that there is a world of knowledge ready to be accessed, but only once we can accept that we don’t already know everything. I think that is super true because we never will be able to learn and improve if we don’t recognize our own weaknesses and show enough humility to learn new concepts. I also really enjoy learning about Jean Piaget's theories of development. I know that there are many different kinds of learners and ways that people best receive information, so in my classroom I will make sure that I am incorporating a variety of teaching methods into each one of my lessons. By doing so, I will be able to help my children retain the most information possible. And lastly, we know that Jesus Christ is the master teacher. I will make Him the biggest part of my teaching that I can, and rely on Him to guide my lessons every day.

Deliverable Summary
Over the course of the past semester, I wasn't too sure what I was expecting. I enjoyed the psychology aspects of this class and how we can use that knowledge to help us understand the children of our future classrooms better. I enjoyed learning about the different theories and stages and truly think that I will look at my students differently now that I know a little more about what goes on inside of their head. For the deliverables, I think that having a wide variety of topics is something that is a good way to have fun and change up the curriculum from the monotonous daily learning. When we worked on 'Saving the Sea Turtle', it was a little challenging to think of something that they can do to show their application and understanding. I feel like the topic overall was something that would be interesting and would keep the class engaged, since it's relevant and trendy. For 'Active Listening', this is crucial that I teach this in my kindergarten class because kids have so much energy and have never been in a classroom for long hours before. I need to help them learn the strategies now that will bless them throughout their entire schooling career. 'Emotional Development' was one that we worked on as a team and later presented to the class. We broke down what emotions are and how we as teachers need to understand that we may never fully know what our students are going through, but we can do everything in our power to respond to how they best need us to respond. I think this is a good one to study on repeatedly because every person is different and has different emotions and ways to cope them, so continually trying to learn about them might be a good thing to do. 'The History of Thanksgiving' is a fun mini lesson that I plan to do the week of Thanksgiving. It'll be interactive and will keep the kids' attention since it's something they'll all be super excited for. 'Classroom Norms' was fun to make and to teach the class, because as teacher candidates we all will one day have to go over norms at the beginning of the year. By learning which ones are effective and which ones aren't we should be able to have a good understanding of what we need to do to execute them properly. The 'Health Lesson Plan' is very important in helping us think less about ourselves and more about others. I think it's important to make sure our own physical/mental/emotional health is where it needs to be, but I like that we focused on a selfless point of view and looked at where others were at and how they were doing. Overall, in creating the deliverables, sometimes it came easy to me and sometimes it did not. I think that planning lessons can be an easy process if you're constantly thinking of you students and their needs and your expectations for the lessons. I hope to continue to use these templates in my future college classes and even when I am teaching in my own classroom one day.
