Hello! I'm Tegan Mecham and this is my second semester here at BYU-Idaho. I am from Brigham City Utah, and I'm currently a Secondary Math Education Major. I love to play sports and to spend time with my loved ones. I plan to serve a mission in Baltimore, Maryland from May 2023- November 2024. I love learning and teaching the things I am most passionate about.
As I have complied all of this work from through out the semester it was amazing to me to see how much I have grown and how much my philosophy on teaching has changed. I loved learning about different strategies and implications that we can apply in our future classrooms. My favorite part was the touch of love the BYU-Idaho has put on the teaching department. They have taught us that teaching with the love of Christ is the most effective way in any classroom. My goal as I grow and learn more about what I want my classroom to look like I will always remember that love is the most important principle that can be shown in the classroom.
Deliverable #1: Health plan. Even though this deliverable was set as an example for me to follow I still have learned a lot from this format. This lesson plan was one that I was personally a student participating in. I remember getting ask the question from the front load, "Picture your future students in your mind. As you consider their health and well being, what do you wish for them? " I felt a deeper connection made through out this lesson that I want to further foster in my own classroom in the future.
Deliverable #2: Save the Sea Turtle. I really enjoyed being a part of this lesson plan. It was fun to broaden my thinking towards teaching because this was for much younger kids then I want to teach when I'm older. It was fun to think of ways to simplify and how actually simplifying with my older students could be beneficial as well. I believe that in this lesson we were able to "Document children's abilities." (Pg 283) and have them feel confident in doing so. This type of exercise when young is a base and foundation for lots more information.
Deliverable #3: Sense of Self. This lesson plan was the one I learned most from because we were able to present it in a classroom setting. It felt real and I loved how we got this experience in class to be able to be flexible and have true discussions. In our lesson our goal was to help the class understand, "Children's sense of self includes beliefs about who they are as people (self-concept) and judgements about their value (self-esteem of self-worth)."(Pg. 469) I loved digging deeper into this topic and to grow a better understanding on how to help my future students with their sense of self.
Deliverable #4: 6 ways of Self-Handicapping. This topic in particular was one of my favorites to learn and create a lesson for. I was so invested because I know how much a problem self-handicapping is in the education program, and building that awareness in kids I think is so important. I learned from this lesson that we are all not perfect. We try our best and most times we fail. I loved learning from this lesson that you can overcome trial and hard things that come up in school or in life, but only if you have the right attitude and mindset. Self-handicapping is, "The need to protect oneself is so strong that it sometimes leads children to create obstacles that give them an excuse for failing...youngsters actually undermine their chances of success." (Pg. 448). I would love if this knowledge would be spread everywhere! I think every teacher no matter the subject needs to be bringing up these issues.
Deliverable #5: Erikson's 8 stages of Moral Development. I love Erikson's theory and all the things that we can learn about our selves when we study it. That is what I learned most from this deliverable is that when we have a backed up knowledge of why we do what we do we feel more confident and smart. This is my own theory of course, but I truly believe that in my future classroom full of late-adolescents kids are able to have a better understanding of their sense of self, their identity, what they want in the future, and so much more. This knowledge us teachers give them can be so much more than an answer on a test. We can help apply knowledge that can affect the rest of their lives!
I have enjoyed putting together these deliverables as they have felt like a realistic dream as I imagine my future class and the activities that we will be doing together. These ideas have come from positive past experiences as well as new things that I have learned in this ED 304 class. One thing that I have become aware of as I have complied these deliverables it that being a teacher takes a lot of preparation, planning, and organization. I feel as though that having a plan is crucial when you are a teacher and then it is also important to be able to be flexible and responsive to the needs of your students. That is one of the goals that have been fostered from making these lesson plans, I want to be prepared, but be so prepared that I can be flexible to the atmosphere of the classroom.
