Earning a Certificate of Identifying Child Abuse and Neglect demonstrates that I am trained to recognize and appropriately respond to signs of potential harm to a student’s mental, emotional, or physical well-being. This training supports Standard 6a by ensuring that I am aware of both the responsibility to involve parents in critical decisions about their child’s welfare and my legal obligation to protect students from harm, especially in cases where disclosure might result in abuse, abandonment, or neglect.
The certificate equips me with the knowledge to make reasoned, ethical decisions—knowing when it's appropriate and required to inform parents about a student’s situation, and when it may be necessary to withhold that information for the child’s safety.
By having students write and sign the classroom expectations, I am empowering them to take an active role in their learning environment. This process helps students understand their rights and responsibilities within the classroom, fostering a sense of ownership and respect for the rules that govern their behavior. It ensures they have a voice in the learning process and contributes to their development as responsible and respectful individuals. The process of having students write and sign expectations ensures they are actively engaged in the process of establishing rules and guidelines, rather than being passive recipients of imposed policies.
The Principles of Professional Conduct emphasize that educators must maintain a high standard of ethics and professionalism both in and out of the classroom. By making my social media account private, I am taking responsible steps to maintain appropriate professional boundaries. This ensures that my personal life remains separate from my professional life and helps to prevent any potential situations where students, colleagues, or parents might access personal or inappropriate content.
Social media privacy settings are also important for protecting student confidentiality and adhering to the ethical standards of confidentiality outlined in the Principles of Professional Conduct. By limiting access to my personal information and interactions on social media, I am ensuring that students and their families cannot view posts or comments that might inadvertently breach privacy or create an uncomfortable situation.
