I chose to do a Minimal Pair game with Thiago to help improve his pronunciation, as he is a level 4 ELL and often faces difficulties distinguishing between similar-sounding words. The activity involved Thiago selecting words from a list that had clear distinctions in pronunciation but were easily confused, such as "sheep" and "ship." He would then say the words aloud, and I would listen carefully to determine which word he said. This game is a fun and engaging way to help Thiago focus on subtle pronunciation differences while building his listening skills.
It also implements a variety of ESOL strategies, including auditory discrimination, repetition, and corrective feedback. By practicing these minimal pairs, Thiago can internalize the correct sounds, which will help him refine his speaking skills. Additionally, the game encourages active participation and interaction, which supports his language acquisition in a dynamic, student-centered way. This strategy also builds his confidence, as he can see the progress he makes in accurately distinguishing and pronouncing words.
