One of the suprahyoid muscles, the digastric muscle has two bellies that attach to the mastoid process and the anterior point of the jaw, joined by an intermediate tendon that is attached to the hyoid bone. The two bellies are innervated by two different cranial nn., the posterior belly by CN VII (mandibular branch) and the anterior belly by CN V (V3). The digastric muscle may open the jaw or elevate/stabilize the hyoid, depending on the state of surrounding muscles.
