DIVISION OF ADVANCEMENT
VOLUNTEER CODE OF CONDUCT
On behalf of the students, faculty, and staff of Brown University, we are incredibly grateful for your volunteer service. The purpose of the following code of conduct is to ensure that the Brown volunteer experience is meaningful, productive, and safe for all participants. We require each volunteer to read and comply with this Volunteer Code of Conduct in order to be eligible to participate in Brown Alumni Association and Advancement volunteer opportunities. The Volunteer Code of Conduct only needs to be acknowledged once and is then considered valid for the duration of a Brown volunteer’s service, regardless of role or duration (unless there is a change in the Code).
As ambassadors for the University, Brown Alumni Association and Advancement volunteers collaborate with members of the Brown community and serve the University in myriad ways, including championing Brown’s mission, encouraging and fostering inclusive peer and community engagement, and building long-term relationships with other alumni, parents, students, and friends. Brown University relies on our committed volunteers to provide a model of leadership to peer alumni, parents, and friends, and to work in partnership with staff to achieve the University’s goals. To that end, all Brown Alumni Association and Advancement volunteers are expected to:
Demonstrate a commitment to the guidelines and responsibilities of the volunteer roles undertaken.
Maintain the highest standard of professional and ethical conduct in all work with other volunteers and all members of the Brown community and the public.
For applicable volunteer roles, safeguard confidential information and maintain privacy guidelines as outlined within the Advancement Data Confidentiality Agreement.
Promptly report to your University contact if data has been compromised or if you have witnessed any violation of volunteer guidelines and responsibilities.
If financial responsibilities are part of the volunteer role, follow all requirements for appropriate control, financial reporting, and reconciliation, ensuring alignment with financial policies of the Brown Alumni Association/Division of Advancement and Brown University.
Maintain an open and responsive line of communication and provide support and feedback to staff as appropriate.
When engaging in discussions around issues of concern to the alumni, parent, and campus community, exercise reasonable care to convey when such remarks, social media posts, etc. are made in a personal vs. official capacity.
Practice acts of inclusion to foster a culture of trust, collaboration, and belonging, and to contribute to a caring and respectful community that embraces diversity and inclusion.
Treat peer volunteers and staff members with respect and consideration.
Brown University reserves the right to disengage with any volunteer who does not adhere to these guidelines or whose actions are inappropriate in relation to the mission and goals of Brown University or the Brown Alumni Association.
