The Final Goodbyes

By: Ellie Lowenberg

This week is the last one for the Panther Press. The school newspaper this year was first, a team of 7th and 8th graders making up the Red and Black. After the first semester ended, the classes swapped and the other group of 7th and 8th graders took over creating the Panther Press. In the Panther Press there are about 31 students in the class and every week each person writes about 1-2 articles. Many eighth graders are very bummed about leaving the school newspaper.

Mar Ubiergo, the head (and creator) of the paper team is going to miss working with Jaidyn and James on papers every week. "My favorite part of being in the Press is delivering articles, and seeing the smiles on kids faces" Mar says. I also interviewed the solo leader of Fashion and Trends, Owen, he loved, "Having different jobs every week." Owen often wrote articles for many different pages at a time. The Panther Press, I think, is the best enrichment, you'll love it when your in 7th or 8th grade.

Walk or Bike To School Day

By: Ellie Lowenberg

Last Wednesday, May 29th, was the first Raleigh Hills walk/bike to school day. Many kids walked but a ton biked. Many parents tagged along too, making our bike rack completely full yesterday. The walk/ bike was a great way for Raleigh Hills to be more eco-friendly by not using gas and polluting the planet. I think this was a great start and that we should have a walk and bike to school day every year. That way, more and more kids will want to ride their bike or walk when it's spring/ summer. If you don't have a bike, you should take the bus, while that is still a vehicle using gas, more people fit in it, thus using less personal cars and getting more people one place giving off less gas. A huge thank you to everyone who participated in the walk and bike to school day, but remember that you can walk and bike to school any day you want!

8th Grade Graduation

By: Ellie Lowenberg

The 8th grade recognition ceremony is June 13th in the cafeteria at 6:30. Many eighth graders are going to the same high school next year, but some are going to other high schools we'll only see when we play them in football. I interviewed three 8th graders. Two going to Beaverton, one going to ACMA. James (BHS) is very excited to meet new people and "hang with the squad." He says he's not going to miss RHS.

Jaidyn is also going to Beaverton High and is excited to start playing soccer for the high school. Jaidyn, however, is going to miss all the people from Raleigh Hills not going to BHS.

Finally, I interviewed Elise, who is going to ACMA. She is looking forward to having better arts programs, but she is going to miss all her friends not going to ACMA. All the eighth graders are excited overall for high school, but Raleigh Hills has been a part of all of our lives for as many as 9 years. Though I know I speak for anyone when I say the eighth graders are ready for high school!!

School News: Talent Show

By: Ellie Lowenberg

Coming up next month is the all school talent show. The talent show is on June 4th at 7:00 pm in the cafeteria. Anyone can perform in the show, and present their talent. Whether it's singing and dancing, or reading poetry, you can do whatever you want. The show is ultimately run by Mr. Libs but their will be middle school students helping with stage and tech elements that need to go into the talent show. A group a 5th grade girls are doing a dance for the talent show. Avery, Katelyn, Lucy, Olivia, Grace, Freja, Lily and Taylah are all learning a Jazz number to "Heart to Break" by Kim Petras. The girls have been practicing for a month now and they are super excited to showcase it. Lucy and Olivia's mom, Gillian Hays is teaching and choreographing this years performance. All the performers better get practicing if they want to be as great as this group, just kidding, everyone should try to show their talent at the show. Every talent that night will be one worth seeing, and it will surely be a fun show.

Middle School Teacher Appreciation

By: Ellie Lowenberg

This week is Raleigh Hills students all around school are celebrating the teachers that help them excel as learners. I asked students all around middle school to shout out a teacher they love. Tony and Luka's favorite teacher they ever had was 5th grade teacher, Ms. Towel. They like Ms. Towel because she was very nice and was able to push students to do their best. "She threw us the best 5th grade party!!" Tony said. 8th grade Ella wants to shout out Mr. Lee. Mr. Lee's classes are always fun, but her favorite unit, was the Columbus mock trial. Mrs. Geddry is a favorite of Jake Bailiff. His favorite thing about Mrs. Geddry is how she is strict and can handle the class. Lastly, Sophia would like to send appreciation to her science teacher, Mr. Koehler. She likes the labs and engineering she gets to do in his class. "His class is very interactive, hands on." Everyone in middle school is grateful for each and every one of their teachers, and we hope they all see that during this week!!

Ellie's State Test Survival Guide

By: Ellie Lowenberg

Nobody likes the long standardized tests we have to take every year. But of course, we have to take up to 5 each May. The tests stress me out and they're hard to focus on, so here's my instructions on how I survive the state tests.

First, make sure -if you know you have a test the next day- to get a good night's sleep, or go to bed early, to make sure you can be very focused the next day.

In addition to eating a good breakfast, bring a snack with protein for before or after the test, depending on when you have a break.

Make sure you go to the bathroom before the test session starts, if you don't you'll be thinking about it the whole session and won't be able to focus.

Another tip would be, if your teacher allows it, -make sure it is okay with them- chew some Extra gum during the session. Chewing gum can improve focus and ultimately, test scores.

Finally, since there is no way to really study for this kind of test, just don't stress about the tests, they just measure your ability to do certain things you have learned over the year. And the results don't impact your grades, so no stress, you got this!!!

Middle School Concert (Aftermath)

By: Ellie Lowenberg

The band and choir concert was Tuesday, April 23rd, in the cafeteria at 7 pm. The concert featured songs from both the band and choir. The beginning (6th grade) band was first, then the choir performed half of their set list, featuring "You Will be Found" from the musical "Dear Evan Hansen," and more. The songs the choir performed featured 17 different soloists. Next up was the advanced band (⅞ th grade) performed their 7 songs, including, "Uptown Funk," and the, "1891 Overture". Then the choir finished up there songs and ended the concert will the show stopping, "This is Me" from the movie, "The Greatest Showman," featuring solos by Angelina (8th), Emily (7th) and Riley (7th). I interviewed Tony Ludwig from ⅞ choir, "My favorite part was in the beginning band played," and his favorite song that he sang was, "Lifeline." The concert was very good this school year and I know the current 5th, 6th, and 7th graders, will make it just as awesome next year.

4th and 5th Grade Concert

By: Ellie Lowenberg

This years 4th and 5th grade musical was on Monday April 15. Before the concert began, I interviewed Elliot and Lily from Mr. Pletch's 5th grade class. Though the show doesn't really have a locked in title, it's about Broadway musicals and the songs in them. Both Lily and Elliot's favorite song in the show is, "Give My Regards To Broadway," from the original Broadway musical, "Little Johnny Jones."

The show doesn't have lead characters, or main parts, but almost every student has at least one line in the musical. The songs in the show featured some from, "Rent," "Wicked," "Grease," and many more. The kids all did great and sang super well.

School News 4/10

The choir and band concert is coming up. The middle schoolers will perform for anyone who wants to come, April 23rd at 7pm. Micah Handorff of advanced/ 7/8 grade band is really excited for the concert. His favorite song to play ¨Uptown Funk¨ will be featured at the concert. Micah plays the trumpet and likes band because everyone works together.

George Denny, of 6th grade choir, really likes to sing. While he doesn’t always sing solos, he thinks the concert will be good. Especially the song, ¨My Shot¨ from Hamilton. The concert features every middle school student, and even if your not in middle school yet, you should definitely come to the concert.

Mayor Doyle At Raleigh Hills!!!

By: Ellie Lowenberg

3-11-19

Last week on Thursday, March 7th, the Mayor of Beaverton came to the Raleigh Hills library to read, and talk to Mrs. Towell's class. Denny Doyle, has been the mayor of Beaverton since 2009. He was the city council before then, and he stayed in that position for 14 years!! He started by answering all the questions the curious 5th graders had. "Did you ever meet a president?" one kid asked. "Yes" Mayor Doyle started, "I have a picture in my office of me with Obama." Then he read "The Sneetches" out loud to the class. All the kids really enjoyed this special guest, thanks Mayor Doyle.

OBOB Results!!!!

By: Ellie Lowenberg

Since OBOB is now over, we have the results from the recent battles. And we have a winner from the bracket. It is the 5th grade Book Sisters!! Their team was Freja, Taylah, Izzy, Lila, and Violet. Though the battles were double elimination, the Book Sisters didn’t lose a single battle.

I interviewed two of the Book Sisters, Freja and Taylah. They are very excited for regionals, coming up this weekend. Freja’s favorite OBOB book was ¨George, or Wild Robot.¨ Taylah’s favorite was ¨Either Ugly, or George¨ Though they came close to losing to another team, The Book Wizards, they pulled ahead and they represent our school as an OBOB team!! Good luck girls!!

Dr. Seuss Day!!

By: Ellie Lowenberg

Dr. Seuss’ birthday is coming up soon. It’s on March 2nd, which is also Read Across America day, a national holiday all about reading. I asked Mrs. Sheir, the Raleigh Hills digital media lab teacher, and technology assistant, what we could do to participate, ¨I think the best thing you could do to celebrate Dr. Seuss day would be to read a book to a younger kid. Or research about Dr. Seuss, but mainly just read!!¨ I think that everyone at Raleigh Hills can find a way to participate in Dr. Seuss day, thank you Mrs. Sheir.

Oregon Battle Of the Books is coming up for the Raleigh Hills 3rd through 5th graders, February 28 and March 1st to be exact. I interviewed the school librarian, Ms. Moore. I asked her what would be going on in these battles, “The battles are bracket style and the teams can lose once before being eliminated from the battles.

The team that is still not eliminated from the bracket at the end of the battles will represent Raleigh Hills at Sherwood High School against other local schools in the regional battle, March 9th” Ms. Moore is very excited, and we can’t wait to see how you guys do, good luck everyone!

What Is Going On At Raleigh Hills??? 2/22

By: Ellie Lowenberg

This week at Raleigh Hills a group of 6th, 7th, and 8th graders are auditioning for the 2019 middle school play, Shrek. There are 34 speaking parts in the show. The roles were announced on Monday 2/11. I interviewed Dane Ganis, who is trying out for the lead, a few hours before auditions. I asked him if he was nervous for his upcoming tryout.

“Yes, because I don’t know how to do a Scottish accent.” Then I asked what part he hopes for. “I want to be Shrek because I feel like I could do really good in the part. It’s basically me, big, green and lives in a swap, that’s my personality.”

I also interviewed Riley Unruh, who is trying out for teenage Fiona. “What are you most nervous for in your audition?” “I’m nervous I might sing bad” Riley said. After the parts were announced most people seemed very excited for the role they’d soon be playing.

I asked Jaidyn Austin, who is playing the Puss in Boots if she was excited about her part, “Yeah, it wasn’t what I tried out for, but I’m excited to get this play started!!”
