Debra Windley was recognized for recently graduating from East Carolina University with her Doctorate.
S.W. Snowden School, Bath Elementary, Eastern Elementary, Northeast Elementary, John Small Elementary, John Cotten Tayloe Elementary, and Chocowinity Primary School were all recognized for participating in the Kids Heart Challenge program for the 2022-2023 school year.
John Small Elementary is recognized for being the Top Kids Heart Challenge School in Beaufort County.
Approval of Minutes
The meetings of the May 2nd, 16th, and 30th were approved as presented.
New Business
Community member Cameron Boltes presented the addition of a student annex at Washington High School to the Board. His plan is to partner with local donors to fund the entire project. The Board unanimously approved moving forward with the project as presented.
Board member Gary Carlton presented information about the WATCH D.O.G.S. Program which he would like to pilot in the Washington City schools.
A safety and security audit was presented by Board member Gary Carlton. Scott Hammonds will attend the June 6 meeting as a result to further discuss the topic.
Reports and Updates
Director of School Nutrition Joanne Kirven presented an update on the following:
Meal costs for 23-24, meals will be free for all students in Beaufort County for the next 4 years
Early College non-reimburseable cost to be paid by the School of Nutrition Department
Summer Meals Program
USDA and NC recognition for the Summer Meals Program
Farm Fun Day at S.W. Snowden School
A 5 year technology plan was presented by the CTO and her team.
A list of surplus items by the Maintenance Department were approved to be sold.
The K-5 Math Curriculum Adoption was approved by the Board by majority vote.
The FY 2024 Budget was approved as presented in the May 2, 2023 meeting. A budget amendment dated May 16, 2023 was also approved.
A Bright Futures update was presented on behalf of Robin McKeithan from the Chamber of Commerce.
Cumulative school capital expenditures by school for years 2013- 2023 was presented.
An overview of the Bath School Gym Project was presented. The interior exhaust pipes have been insulated and sealed and the new HVAC units should be delivered on May 23, 2023.
Contract addendum were unanimously approved as presented for Occupational Therapy, Plus, Inc. & Speech Therapy East, Inc.
Superintendent Report
An update was presented about the Ed Tech School closure. It will be redefined as an alternative learning program. Dr. Cheeseman proposed the closure of the school as of June 30, 2023. His recommendation is to remove the school code & create an alternative learning program for students which would keep the test data with the student's home school. The Board unanimously voted to approve this request.
Information was presented to the Board concerning the Senate House Bill 670- Weighted Student Funding.
A Joint Use Agreement between BCS and the City of Washington for the use of the athletic fields at John Cotten Tayloe Elementary by approved by unanimous vote.
A low-wealth funding update for Beaufort County Schools FY 2023- 2024 was provided.
Information was provided to the Board regarding Senate Bill 670- Weighted Student Funding.
An update was given on the plan to videotape the Board of Education meetings. Filming will begin in July 2023.
The last day of school, June 9, was unanimously voted upon to change to a 3-hour early release day.
Information and updates were given during the month of May meetings about the Needs-Based School RFQ for the PK- Grade 3 school in the City of Washington construction project. The board will meet on May 30, 2023, to hear from the top 3 companies that submitted an RFQ. The three companies who presented were:
