Use search technologies effectively
Use search engines efficiently to return the results they need for a given search. Whilst search engines are becoming increasingly intelligent at interpreting a search term and returning what visitors want, knowing how to use advanced searching is useful.
With the pupils, search for the term 'beatle'. Talk through the results, discussing why they might not have been what they expected. Ask the children if they can identify any other terms that could be confusing, such as 'jaguar', 'apple' or 'blackberry'.
Introduce the pupils to the use of the minus sign as a filter. This excludes any pages that include the word that comes after the sign. For example 'beatle -band' will only show pages that rank highly for the word beatle, but don’t include the word 'band'. Identify how this approach could be used to improve results for 'jaguar', 'apple' and 'blackberry'.
WORKING TOWARDS - Pupils understand how keywords are combined to find pages on the Internet.
MET - Pupils can identify suitable keywords that could be used to generate more reliable results and make regular use of these in their own Internet searches.
Understand that search engines provide search results for far more then just websites, but now search and rank images, videos, books, shopping products, locations on a map and more.
Pupils should feel confident in using a range of search tools to help locate the exact resource or information they are looking for.
Identify further search tools, including news search, video search and maps search.
