Select, use and combine a variety of software (including internet services) on a range of digital devices to design and create a range of programs, systems and content that accomplish given goals, including collecting, analysing, evaluating and presenting data and information
Select the most appropriate program(s) for a given task eg. spreadsheet, word document, image editor etc.
To do this, they should fully understand the core functions of a piece of software, including its strengths and limitations.
Pupils should also be able to identify the most appropriate hardware for a given task eg. laptop, desktop, tablet or digital camera etc.
The illustrated example on Target Tracker shows how a desktop publisher could be used to record the outcomes from a science experiment.
BELOW - When shown the options, children can identify the most appropriate piece of software for a task and can use it effectively.
MET - Pupils can use prior knowledge and experience to help them identify the most appropriate piece of software and hardware for a task and can use it effectively.
FURTHER PROGRESSION - Pupils can identify the most appropriate piece of software and hardware for a task, clearly justifying their choice with reference to each software's functionality. They can make effective use of a range of tools.
Use a range of programs and devices to complete a single task eg. creating a poster.
They should understand how one program may be used to create something, such as a logo or diagram, and that this can then be incorporated into another document eg. by importing it or copying and pasting it.
Pupils should also understand how different hardware may be used eg. taking a photo on a table or digital camera which can then be embedded within another document on a computer.
BELOW - Pupils can import resources from one program into another. They can embed resources such as photos.
MET - Pupils can import resources from multiple programs and devices (such as cameras) combining these within a single document.
FURTHER PROGRESSION - Pupils can import resources from multiple programs and devices eg. cameras or microphones. They can combine these within a single document, identifying the benefits that each platform offered.
Year 4 have used The Arduino Science Journal which is an app that allows you to gather data about the world around you by harnessing the sensors in your smartphone as well as sensors connected to Arduino. They were finding out the noise levels in different classes around school!
