National Curriculum
Understand how results are selected and ranked by search engines.
Understand how search engines identify and rank their results.
This begins with the understanding of 'keywords' as being a search term that is looked for within a webpage; if the term is found, the webpage forms part of the search result.
Provide the pupils with a series of keywords to search for. They must use a search engine to search for the term, then find the keyword on the returned pages. Provide some keywords that may return unexpected pages eg. beatle (returns the band), jaguar (returns the car) and Manchester (returns the football team) Discuss each in turn.
Once children understand how keywords are used to identify matching pages, they can then develop their understanding of how search engines rank these results, so the most suitable websites appear first. This is done through a series of complicated rules and algorithms, but the general idea is to calculate how reliable a website is by looking at which websites link to it.
BELOW - Pupils understand that keywords used in a search will appear on the linked pages. They understand that higher ranked results are generally more reliable.
MET - Pupils understand how keywords are used to search for pages on the Internet. They have some understanding of how search engines rank results by reliability.
FURTHER PROGRESSION - Pupils understand how some keywords may mean more than one thing to a search engine. They understand how search engines rank results by reliability.
