Scat Replica Activity
How long it’ll take: 40 minutes, or as long as they are interested
What the goal is: Campers will be able to identify scat they find while on trail
What the objectives are: Campers will use Scat/Fact cards to help them replicate scat using homemade play dough (See Animal Tracks Activity for recipe)
Campers will be challenged to guess what their group friends have replicated.
What you’ll need:
Scat ID Cards (Need to be printed out)
Mud
Nature materials found in yard
What you’ll do:
Make a batch of mud in a bowl or shallow hole. Mix it up so its the consistency of thick peanut butter.
Give each camper a fist sized ball of mud and one Animal Scat Card (Don’t let them show other campers the backside)
Each camper will have 15 minutes to replicate the scat. They can use natural items to help give the scat hairy, berry, or grassy effect if needed.
Have campers share their scat and other campers can take a guess at what it is.
Once everyone has shared, campers can discuss facts about their animals. Ask questions like:
Why do you think this animals scat looks that way? What do they eat that makes it (Hairy, berry, etc.)
Why is being able to identify scat important while you're out on trail?
