How long it’ll take:
15 minutes
What the goal is:
Campers should have fun dancing and navigating which direction they are facing.
What the objectives are:
Campers should have a basic understanding of compass reading.
What you’ll need:
One compass per camper and a source of music (optional)
What you’ll do:
In a relatively open space, have campers spread out with a compass in hand.
Explain that they will now have a dance party! When the music is playing, they must break into their best dances moves and roam around the space (not looking at their compass!). When the music stops. They must read their compass and say what direction they are currently facing (N,S,E,W). The last person to say their direction must sit out for that round.
Repeat as many times as appropriate.
Debrief with a discussion on how we can get distracted when we are having fun. But with excellent compass reading, we can always recheck our directional route.
***If music is unavailable, you can have kids chant "Mingle, mingle, mingle!", or use ice breaker questions instead of music.
