Pollinators Activity
How long it’ll take: 30-40 Minutes
What the goal is: Campers will create a pollinator seed “bomb” to give to friends and family or to spread around their own yards. Campers will have basic knowledge of how pollination works and how it affects their own lives.
What the objectives are: Make homemade seed bombs, discuss pollination and why pollinators are important and need to be protected.
What you’ll need:
1 cup of Native Seeds (California Rose, California Poppies, Honeysuckle, Lupine, Milkweed - Can be found at local nursery or garden store. For more info on what’s local to your area use this database: https://www.audubon.org/native-plants )
2-3 cups of Mud or Clay (Found in yard or from craft shop)
5 cups of Soil/Compost (Peat Free)
Mixing Bowl
Water
Measuring cups
What you’ll do:
Start by asking your campers what their favorite fruit is (a good conversation to have after or during snack time so they can actually eat their favorite fruit). Ask them where they think fruits come from. Then start a discussion about pollination, how it works, and why it’s important. Ask them who they think is pollinating their favorite fruits. Then talk about the different pollinators they can find in their backyard (all this information can be found in the Fact sheet).
In a large mixing bowl, mix together compost, clay and seeds. Use your hands to make sure everything is mixed thoroughly.
Slowly add water to the bowl and mix with hands until mixture sticks together.
Take a handful of the mixture and make it into a ball (repeat until all mixture is balled up).
Place in a sunny spot to dry. Have campers write a note to their loved ones explaining how the seed bomb works and what they learned about pollinators.
Wash your hands after!
