How long it’ll take: Ongoing throughout the camp week(s).
What the goal is: Campers will be able to record birds found throughout their weeks of camp and on in a fun and engaging way.
What the objectives are: Give campers the tools needed to become a self sufficient birder.
What you’ll need:
Bird Bingo Card for each camper
Writing utensil
Avid4 Bird Facts (digital or hard copy)
Choose 1: Merlin Bird ID, Bird Field Guide, Google
What you’ll do:
Give each camper their own copy of the Bird Bingo Card and give them a few moments to become familiar with it.
Tell them the steps/rules to playing the game:
Be honest: only mark a bird if you’ve actually seen it
Be kind to the birds. If you see a bird, leave it at that. Don’t chase or scare the birds in order to get a better view (that’s harassing wildlife).
Do not feed birds by hand. Only use a bird feeder (so they don’t learn that humans are associated with that food). And only feed them seeds, bugs or fruit.
At any time during camp, a camper can pull out the bingo card and mark down a bird they’ve seen. (See Birding Activity for steps on how to Bird)
