The Gokongwei Brothers School of Education and Learning Design has opened its doors at a time when innovation and creativity underline the Ateneo de Manila University’s way forward in the new global educational landscape. The vision behind the name of the newest school in the Higher Education Cluster is to go beyond being just a traditional ‘School of Education’. GBSEALD puts designing learning at the forefront, to highlight the science and art behind learning and teaching. It aims to produce not just excellent teachers at the basic and higher education levels, but hopes to graduate other learning professionals as well, in such fields as online instructional design, educational leadership and entrepreneurship, and human resource management.
The three academic departments that currently comprise GBSEALD accurately reflect the School’s research agenda: Curriculum, Pedagogy and Assessment, Educational Management and Leadership, and Catholic Educational Philosophy and Practice. Completing the GBSEALD roster are the Ateneo SALT Institute (Science and Art of Learning and Teaching) for educational technology and innovation, the Ateneo Teacher Center (ATC) for teacher training, the Ignatian Initiative for Teacher Excellence (IGNITE) for Jesuit education, the Pathways to Higher Education for outreach, and the newly established Lily Gokongwei Ngochua Leadership Academy.
In addition to its nine master's degree programs and a minor in education for the undergraduates, the School also offers the research and professional doctoral program: A PhD in Education (Research Track) and an EdD with three tracks: Educational Leadership and Administration (ELA), Learning and Teaching (TL), Catholic Educational Leadership and Pedagogy (CELT)
Finally, the School has designed an innovative undergraduate degree program called BS in Learning Science and Design (BS LEARN), which aims to produce not only teachers for schools and universities, but learning professionals in online education, human resource, and other fields.
The School of Humanities, Ateneo de Manila University, imagines itself as “a community of educators, scholars, and artists, who are engaged in the critical interpretation and imaginative expression of human experiences.” This self-imagining is reflected in part in the graduate programs that it offers--in literary and cultural studies, English language and literature, English language and literature teaching, Filipino literature, philosophy, religious education, and various subdisciplines of theology.
The commitment to education is further evident in the work of the Ateneo Center for English Language Teaching (ACELT), housed in the English Department, which regularly runs teacher training programs. Creative writing is nurtured by the Ateneo Institute of Literary Arts and Practices, housed in the Filipino Department, which conducts an annual national writing workshop.
Research at the School is as varied as the constitution of its faculty. The research areas include Philippine literature, popular culture, the diaspora, inculturation, translation, and the varieties of English. Faculty members of the School of Humanities produce scores of papers and books each year, in addition to making outstanding creations in the literary, performing, and screen arts.
Graduate students of the School can expect top-notch training from the faculty. Yet while disciplinal expertise is the commonly accepted goal of higher studies, the social mission of the university is not neglected. Graduate students of the School of Humanities are urged to conduct original research or projects that can contribute to community- or nation-building.

Our Mathematics programs cover mathematical modelling and scientific computing that are essential in developing policies to deal with the spread of disease or the effects of malnutrition. In Environmental Science, our efforts include assessments of climate and population change on regional groundwater resources and their subsequent influence on floods and droughts. Health Sciences is concerned with the epidemiological profile and transmission dynamics of COVID-19 in the Philippines. Information Systems and Computer Science is making advances in the use of artificial intelligence and the Ateneo Laboratory for the Learning Sciences (ALLS) studies the intersection of Computer Science and Education. With Electronics, Computer, and Communications Engineering, we work with wireless sensor networks for environmental monitoring and smart agriculture. The nanotechnology lab of Chemistry is used by students to fabricate nanomaterials and printed electronics for next-generation computers. In Biology, the Biodiversity Laboratory of has discovered and named more than 40 new insect species. Physics conducts studies on geohazards such as earthquakes and landslides and has cooperated with NASA on air quality monitoring. The Ateneo Innovation Center (AIC) is involved in numerous community projects, such as developing a minimum viable ventilator and deploying a solar-powered auto hand washer in a Pasig City park. As the hub of scientific activity in SOSE, the Ateneo Research Institute of Science and Engineering (ARISE) serves as the focal point of research programs and initiatives of the School.
Rest assured of support from your teachers, fellow students, and SOSE staff as we work together and learn from each other, united in our vision of serving Philippine society through education and research. SOSE looks forward to your joining us in building a better future and a better world through science and engineering.
