Q: When will my scholarship be posted? 

Your PSA award is posted to your account within two weeks of you accepting your offer. There could be multiple reasons why a student does not have a PSA award on their MyASU finances page: they are either not eligible; they do not have a complete financial aid file (e.g., unfiled FAFSA); or the financial aid office has not yet posted it. If it has been more than 3 weeks since you accepted your office to join the NGSC and you still do not see it posted, you may contact NGSC@asu.edu or the financial aid office directly. 

Q: I am unable to file FAFSA due to my status/residency. 

Students' who are ineligible to file for FAFSA will have their awards posted in late August. 

Q: My PSA Award was disbursed, but I still have a remaining base tuition balance.

Q: My move-in date conflicts with the Year 1 Retreat dates. 

We requested early move in for all incoming NGSC students so you should not have a conflict.

Q: Where are we going?

An overnight experience at Camp Friendly Pines in Prescott, AZ. 

Q: What are the costs?

We will be covering all costs associated with this trip, from roundtrip buses from each campus, to meals at camp, and activity costs at camp. 

Q: Can I drive myself or carpool to camp? Can I stay off camp site nearby?

All students must stay onsite and utilize the chartered bus transportation offered by the NGSC. Students may not take a separate transportation or leave camp premises during the trip. 

Q: When/where are the buses? When do I get home?

Detailed logistics and a schedule will be shared with students the week before the retreat. There will be a bus for each campus, Tempe, Downtown, Polytechnic, and West Valley. Depending on which campus you are on, pick-up is roughly between the hours of 7-8 am on Saturday morning. Drop off at campus will be around 3pm on Sunday afternoon. 

Q: What do I need to bring?

• A sleeping bag and pillow (or sheets and blankets). Cabins will provide a mattress but no sheets, blankets or pillows. 

• A towel for showering.

• Toiletries

• Outdoor-appropriate clothing and footwear. It will be cooler up in the mountains compared to the valley, although still warm during the day. August is monsoon season, so layers are strongly recommended. Expect temperature fluctuations between 60-90 degrees. 

  • Activities offered range from tennis, basketball, volleyball, archery, low ropes, hiking, kayaking, and more. 

• Reusable water bottle!!! THIS IS VERY IMPORTANT!

Friendly Pines has a camp store that sells basic toiletries and over-the-counter medications.

Q: What if I have allergies/dietary restrictions/preferences?

Camp staff will be preparing meals based on what students list on their camp waiver (linked above). Students who do not have dietary restrictions but have strong food preferences or limitations should still list them on the waiver as meals are prepared based on what is submitted on the waiver. We cannot guarantee all dietary preferences can be accommodated.  

Q: What if I require physical accommodations/cannot participate in certain activities? 

Strenuous physical games/activities are offered and optional. Team building and camp activities built into the schedule are not overly physically challenging and can be altered to accommodate students. Students who require physical accommodations such as wheelchair access should reach out to staff so we can make arrangements. We want you to feel comfortable and safe so please communicate with us so we can best accommodate and support you. We will have golf cart available to assist students with mobility constraints.

Q: Can I bring a suitcase or a duffel bag for the Year 1 Retreat?

Yes, there will be ample space for luggage on the charter bus. 

Q: What type of food will be available at the Year 1 Retreat?
You can find a full menu here. Students should note what their dietary restrictions/preferences on their camp waiver as that will determine the portions available for restricted meals. We cannot guarantee all dietary preferences can be accommodated.  

Enroll in PAF 115: Foundations of Cross-Sector Leadership - you will enroll yourself as your advisor cannot do it for you.

If enrolling in PAF 115 will take you over 18 credit hours, please connect with your academic advisor about a credit hour override.

Q: What NGSC events do I need to attend? What events can I skip? 

Throughout your 2, 3 or 4 years at the NGSC, you’ll see annual mandatory and optional events. Students should attend mandatory events as missing them will impact your program's standing and scholarship. 

Optional events are not required, however, highly encouraged as they offer valuable information, resources, or networking opportunities that complement your NGSC experience.

Q: What do I need to wear/bring to each mandatory event?

A detailed email will be sent prior to each major event, i.e. Retreat, MT Kickoff, workshops, to provide information, context, and required preparation, if any. 

Q: What are the mandatory events for Spring?

Students should refer to their Program Map for spring dates. Location and time will be released during winter break for Spring events. 

Family Info Session (Virtual)

For family members of the NGSC who are interested in knowing a bit more about what we do! Hosted by the NGSC Director, Kim Baldwin, and Chief of Public Service, Cindy Parnell, parents, Guardians, and other family members are welcome to attend and ask questions or mingle with other parents. 

Mission Team Explore (Virtual)

A virtual Zoom session to explore all the 30+ Mission Teams the NGSC has to offer. Get a general overview of what Mission Teams do, meet the upcoming student leaders for each Mission Team, and ask any questions you may have to make your decision on which Mission Team to join! You can begin reviewing Mission Teams here.

Year 1 Retreat (In-Person)

Your only overnight experience in the NGSC. Buses will depart from each campus to Camp Friendly Pines in Prescott, AZ. Meet your cohort, get to know staff and student leaders in the program. This is your formal induction into the program. 

NGSC Welcome (In-Person)

An informal and fun way to kick off the new year! Come meet active students, staff members, explore committees, and see the NGSC office space in the football stadium. Enjoy Italian sodas and snacks! Raffle prizes will be given out throughout the event.

Mission Team Kickoff (In-Person)

This event kicks off your Mission Team experience. All NGSC students active on Mission Teams are required to attend. Get to your Mission Team members and begin planning on how you want to approach your social issue for the academic year.  

Family Weekend (In-Person)

All active students, alumni, parents, and family members are welcome to attend. Come join us for food, drinks, games, and NGSC merch. The NGSC Family Weekend is free to attend and does not require purchase or registration with ASU's Family Weekend event. 

Q: What is a committee and what committees are there?

NGSC Student Committees are an optional experience, designed to allow students to have a voice in shaping the program. Students may explore the complete list of committees and their functions here. 

Q: How do I sign up for a committee?

The committee sign-up form. Please note the deadline to sign up for committees is August 24. 

Q: Who do I talk to to get more information about a committee and its responsibilities?

Q: Is there a class for the Ambassadors & Admissions Committee? 

Students interested in joining the Ambassador and Admissions Committee should also register for PAF 294: NGSC Ambassadors for Leadership and Service course, as it is the only committee that offers a class credit for its members. The Ambassador and Admissions Committee requires extensive training, workshops, and commitment throughout the year.
