If a student does not meet the academic or participation requirements of the NGSC listed in the NGSC Contract, they will be subject to a warning, probation, and/or removal from the program. Please view the NGSC Program Status Chart below.
There are certain experiences throughout the year that are critical to the effectiveness of the program and your leadership development within it. As a student, you have the responsibility and obligation to make choices and balance your priorities.
As a member of the NGSC, when you make those choices, you must keep in mind that there are no excused absences or make-up options for any required events (the only exceptions being ASU class requirements and religious holidays). Should you miss an event, your absence or failure to participate will be documented, and after each semester, program staff will evaluate your participation as a member of NGSC.
Failure to comply with participation standards of the program will impact your program status resulting in a warning, probation, or removal from the program, including a possible reduction or loss of your PSA Scholarship.

NGSC Probation, Removal, or Scholarship Reduction Appeals
Appeals Process
A student who has been placed on Probation or who has been Removed from the program, and has thus had their PSA Scholarship reduced or revoked, has the opportunity to request a review of their eligibility based on special or unusual circumstances. The steps below outline the appeals process.
Eligibility
A student may be eligible to submit an appeal only if they experienced significant extenuating circumstances beyond their control. Examples of extenuating circumstances include:
Medical. Only serious conditions may be considered extenuating circumstances. Both physical and mental illness will be evaluated as a medical circumstance. A doctor’s statement should be presented that indicates the illness significantly hindered their ability to attend class or fulfill academic obligations.
Compassionate. Only extraordinary personal circumstances beyond their control that prevented them from continuing classes may be considered extenuating circumstances.
Care. The care of a seriously ill immediate family member may be a valid circumstance. Credible documentation should accompany the appeal.
Death in the family. A death in the immediate family may be a valid circumstance. The death of an extended family member or friend will only be considered a valid circumstance if they explain and document why that death was exceptionally distressing.
Victim of crime/abuse. Acts of crime or abuse may be considered extenuating circumstances if they explain how it significantly impacted the ability to attend classes or fulfill academic obligations. Credible documentation, such as a copy of a police report, should accompany the appeal.
If at any time a student feels as though they cannot meet program expectations, they need to meet with NGSC staff immediately to discuss their circumstances instead of waiting until the end of the semester. In these cases, a student should consult NGSC program staff and their academic advisor, and utilize ASU resources to ensure that they receive the guidance and assistance necessary to return to good standing in the program (if possible) and to remain on track academically to graduate.
Review Levels
A student's program status will determine the process by which and by whom their appeal will be reviewed.
Appeals related to Probation will be reviewed by one member of NGSC staff.
All appeals related to program Removal will be reviewed by the NGSC Appeals Review Committee (described below).
Timeline
Probation Appeals will be reviewed within two weeks. Written notification of the decision will be sent via ASU email to the student.
Removal Appeals will be reviewed within four to six weeks. Written notification of the decision will be sent via ASU email to the student.
