Students who transfer into the NGSC program will have some adjustments and flexibility in completing the requirements, given their limited time to graduate.
As transfers, you are NOT required to earn the Certificate in Cross Sector Leadership, but you are required to take the following 3 classes along with the Year 1 Workshops:
PAF 215 Community Impact Lab
PAF 315 Cross-Sector Collaboration
PAF 421 Leadership Capstone or CPP 394 NGSC Peer Instruction (application required)
If you DO want the certificate, you have to take these 2 in addition to the 4 listed above:
PAF 311 Leadership and Change (second or third semester)
PAF 415 Social Entrepreneurship (third or fourth semester)
Most transfers will take one NGSC class per semester, but those who want to get the certificate have to double up a couple semesters. For this reason, you are allowed to take PAF 215 simultaneously with the Y1 Prep Workshops in your first semester (first-time freshmen are not).
Reciprocal credit can be given for 3 out of the 6 classes:
PAF 215 Community Impact Lab
PAF 311 Leadership and Change
PAF 415 Social Entrepreneurship
If you have taken any classes at your community college that you think correspond with the ones listed above (and are transferring over to ASU), please connect with Kim Baldwin about potential reciprocal credit. This may also help you in earning the certificate in the shortened time frame you have. You can view all class descriptions here to identify possible reciprocal credit.
If you have any questions about classes or coursework, please feel free to reach out to Kim Baldwin.
As a transfer student, you will be able to count any of your past internships completed during any of your time in higher education - community college or another university. Internships can be more traditional or project-based experiences. All internships must meet the NGSC criteria in order to be counted.
An internship should be recognized as a professional development opportunity where the student is directly supervised and mentored by a staff member at the organization. Interns are given responsibilities beyond basic administrative or clerical tasks and focus on more project-based experiences.
observe the values of the organization and, by extension, the sector in which it exists;
be intertwined in the day-to-day operations of the organization or company;
explore and understand the decision-making processes of that organization from an insider’s perspective; and
serve a minimum of 70 hours.
If you have any questions about internships, please reach out to Kim Baldwin.
Incoming transfer students have the opportunity to jump-start their leadership journey and requirements in the program. Below are three leadership positions available to apply for over the summer. If you are interested in applying, reach out to the NGSC Student Leadership Coordinator Leah Thompson.
Deputy Transfer Committee Chair
Assists the transfer committee chair in completing all requirements of the committee. In the absence of the Transfer Committee Chair, the Deputy hosts meetings and oversees committee events.
Transfer Recruitment Subcommittee Chair
Oversees the recruitment team and operation of events such as recruitment events, meet and greets, etc. This role is explicitly dedicated to the recruitment of Maricopa Community College Students.
Deputy Chief of Staff
Supports and assists the NGSC Chief of Staff in implementing the mission and goals of the leadership team.
The transfer committee is a community of transfer students within the NGSC program. They fully participate in the committee’s requirements, but they also provide support advice and mentorship to incoming transfer students. Although committee participation is not required, it is highly recommended as a culture and bonding experience for all transfer students.
For more information, reach out to the Transfer Committee Chair Matthew Flores.
