This page is only applicable to active NGSC students, not incoming.
ASU ensures that all members of the NGSC receive base tuition coverage. Each scholarship is tailored to each individual financial aid package and is renewable for up to eight semesters (4 semesters for transfer students) as long as the student remains in good standing.
Why do I still have a balance on my account? It even still says I have tuition due.
The PSA Scholarship covers only up to base tuition (+ $2500), but does not cover other costs of attendance like academic fees, housing, meals, books, or parking passes.
Even if the amount remaining on your account after the PSA Scholarship is disbursed is listed as “Tuition UG Resident / Non Resident”, the amount remaining may not be covered by your scholarship . The scholarship is disbursed into your account and often will cover smaller charges, but the total amount due to you for being a part of the NGSC has already been awarded. One way to double check that the PSA Scholarship has been fully disbursed is to look at the “Payments” on your myFinances page.
Hurray, I have money left over in my account! Can I use this money to buy a parking pass or books?
Sure! Though the PSA Scholarship covers the calculations we went through above, the money is deposited into your account as one lump sum each semester. It does not go to specific charges, it just goes to cover the overall charge of the account. The money that is leftover in your account after all your charges for tuition and fees are subtracted you are free to spend as you like.
It looks like we will still need additional money to cover other costs of attendance. Should we accept our Direct Loans/Parent PLUS Loans? How much should we accept? Can we accept some of it and not all?
PSA staff are not qualified or trained to give advice about financial aid and loans. Please reach out directly to Financial Aid – they have folks trained in how to respond to these types of questions: https://students.asu.edu/contact/financialaid.
I see lots of fees in My Accounts. Are these mandatory? Can I get any of these taken off?
For any questions about specific fees, please contact ASU Billing: https://students.asu.edu/tuitionandbilling
I’m thinking about Studying Abroad. Will my funding be halted? Will the PSA Scholarship cover the costs of my study abroad program?
Next Generation Service Corps members are encouraged to study abroad or out of state up to ¼ of their overall time in the program (2 semesters for freshmen, 1 semester for transfer students). The PSA Scholarship continues to fund you at the same base tuition rate while you are away, but students are responsible for any additional program fees or costs incurred.
Wait! Getting other scholarships seems to work against my PSA Scholarship - aren’t I getting less than base tuition covered? Wouldn’t I get more PSA money if I declined my other scholarships?
First, any scholarships that you earn that are outside of the University Grants and Scholarships pool of money are not included in our calculation.
Second, technically, yes, you could receive a bigger PSA Scholarship if you turned down other scholarships, but the overall combination of University Grants and Scholarships and PSA Scholarship amounts would not exceed base tuition + $2500.
In fact, because of your PSA Scholarship, the ceiling for how much you can actually get from University Grants and Scholarships is increased with the additional $2500 (if you are a Cohort 1-5 member).
My base tuition is already being fully covered by another program. Am I still eligible to participate in the program?
Yes!
I’m thinking of graduating early and starting my Masters degree here at ASU. Will my PSA Scholarship cover my graduate school tuition?
Potentially, yes. Students who graduate early and do not use all eight semesters for undergraduate purposes may use the remaining semesters of eligibility towards an approved master’s program (excludes MBA or law). Their scholarship amount would remain the same as what they were receiving their last semester of undergrad, and does not get recalculated to graduate level tuition. This is in accordance with the New American University Award standards.
When a student applies for graduate school at ASU, we ask them to fill out the Early Graduation Form to notify us and start the conversation. Students receiving the PSA Scholarship as a graduate student must first complete the cross sector leadership certificate before starting their graduate program (unless in a 4+1 program) and must remain engaged in the program’s experiential learning components (internships/activities).
The list below is to help identify what to include on your PSA Scholarship calculation, but are not a comprehensive list.
Stackable - not counted toward the PSA Scholarship calculation: ANY PRIVATE SCHOLARSHIPS, Medallion Scholarship, Community Assistant stipends, Residential College Leader stipends, ASU Second-Year Spark Progression Scholarship, Federal Pell-Grants/Work-study
Non-stackable - counted toward the PSA Scholarship calculation: New American University Awards, ASU RaiseMe, College Attainment Grant, Solutions Grants, University Grants, Obama Scholarships, University FA Trust Grants, Supplemental Grants, Diablos Award, Leadership Scholarship Program Awards, Barrett or College Awards, Earn to Learn (Institutional)
The estimator below reflects tuition rates for the 2022-2023 academic year.
Reminder: The PSA Scholarship is applied to students' accounts as an AMOUNT, not to specific charges (i.e. tuition). To check that your full PSA Scholarship has been applied, reference "Payments" - accessible from your MyASU Finances page.
