The course provides a broad overview of Science from a Physics perspective.

The aim of the course is to provide pupils with a broad experience of Physics, providing coverage of appropriate Level 4 experiences and outcomes and laying the foundations for further study of Physics National 4 and 5 in S4.

Key areas of study are:

1. Telecommunications

Speed of sound and light, properties of waves, optical fibres and their uses, curved reflectors and satellites.

2. Electricity

Generation of electricity, Flexes and fuses, voltage, current and resistance, ac and dc current, series and parallel circuits, power and energy, electromagnetism.

3. Radiations

Lenses and eyesight, the electromagnetic spectrum, nuclear radiation and their applications in industry and medicine.

4. Transport

Measuring and recording data from experiments to produce speed-time graphs. Calculation of acceleration and distance travelled from speed-time graphs.

Skills Developed

The course will provide pupils with the opportunity to develop the key skills of scientific enquiry and investigation which are integrated throughout the course. These skills include selecting, interpreting/evaluating and presenting appropriate information, use of calculations, demonstrating and applying scientific knowledge to solve problems. There will be opportunities to use and develop skills in ICT.

Planned Pupil Experiences

A wide range of learning and teaching strategies are used with classes, such as developing critical thinking skills, direct teaching, paired and /or group work. Work in class is supported through the use of notes, ICT and other digital media. Practical experiences will be used to demonstrate aspects of the course. Pupils are expected to take responsibility for their learning.

Assessment

Knowledge and skills will be assessed in different ways, depending on the topic being studied. This will include experimental and investigation work, classroom tests and assessed work/homework. There is a formal exam at the end of S3. This will assess suitability for course choice in S4.

Homework

Homework will be set by the class teacher on a regular basis.

Progression Routes

This will depend on progress in S3 but pupils will have the opportunity to progress in S4 into National 3, 4 or 5 Physics, NPA Science & Health or NPA Science & Technologies. These subjects can then allow progression further into Higher or Advanced Higher Physics.
