S1s have 4 periods of Maths every week.
Our S1 classes are mixed ability for the first couple of weeks then set. Set are reviewed regularly and movement between set is possible throughout the year.
In S1, we follow the Cfe curriculum and we will cover:
Whole Numbers
Intergers
Power and Roots
Multiples, Factors, LCM and HCF
Fractions
Decimals
Percentages
Finance
Patterns and Relationships
Time
Distance, Speed, Time
Perimeter and Area
Volume
Angles
Coordinates
Information Handling
Probability
The first assessment takes place after a couple of weeks and is a diagnostic test assessing skills from primary school. We use the results, along with the information passed on by primary school, SNSA results and teacher judgement to create set classes.
There will be another 2 block assessments by the end of S1. Assessments are holistic and cover everything that has been taught in class. They are timed, closed book assessments, without the use of a calculator. However, multiplication squares are permitted if required.
In S1, pupils can expect a homework every week or every other week. They will be handed a Homework booklet every term. However, homework is also always posted on Microsoft Teams as an assignment, so they know what homework is due and when, and can also access a digital copy should they lose their paper copy. Pupils typically get a week to complete their homework.
In order to have the best chance of success in Maths, we encourage our puils to come prepared with the following material:
Essential
Notes booklet
Jotter
A sharp pencil
A rubber
Recommended
A ruler
A pencil sharpener
A scientific calculator *
* It is worth investing in a good scientific calculator as this will last them until they leave school. While exams might seem far away, the earlier they familiarise themselves with their own calculator the better. We recommend a calculator with a fraction button (see below). It does not have to be a known brand calculator, provided the calculator has a fraction button.
