Study away programs are academic programs that utilize experiential learning in an intercultural context (domestic or international) to enhance intercultural competence/sensitivity development as part of learning outcomes. Curriculum design varies by program with a focus on (a) integration of multiple high impact practices such as learning communities, community-based learning, global learning, internships, homestays, (b) critical reflective thinking before, during, and after program, (c) faith integration, and (d) academic integration with degree program.
