In this course, we'll be exploring a unique approach to grading called ungrading. This method focuses on feedback, self-assessment, and mastery of skills rather than traditional grading practices. While it might be different from what you're used to, I believe it offers significant benefits for your learning and growth. You are capable of meeting my expectations for this course! If you are ever concerned about how well you are doing in this course, please come speak with me.
What does Ungrading look like?
You won't receive traditional letter or number grades on your assignments. Instead, I'll provide you with feedback that highlights your strengths and areas for improvement. You will receive credit, half credit or no credit for each assignment. For some assignments, you'll have opportunities to revise and resubmit your work based on this feedback, allowing you to learn from your mistakes and demonstrate your understanding of the material.
Why am I doing an Ungrading model?
Ungrading encourages engagement with course material and fosters a growth mindset by focusing on learning rather than grades. It reduces the stress and anxiety often associated with traditional grading, allowing you to explore concepts more freely. My goal for you in this course is to learn and practice the skills you need to be successful in college. I believe this model takes some of the pressure off for you to do just that.
What is your role in the Ungrading model?
As a student in this course, you'll play an active role in assessing your own learning progress. You'll have opportunities for self-reflection and self-assessment that will help you take ownership of your education.
At the end of the semester, you'll be asked to submit a reflection on your experience this semester and where you believe your grade stands based on your understanding of the course material and your growth throughout the semester. I will consider your reflection alongside other course assessments when assigning your final grade.
I will also be providing some guidelines on what each letter grade looks like in this class so you have some understanding of what I am looking for from the start of the semester. Each assignment will have a rubric of what it takes to earn credit, half credit, or no credit.
If you have any questions or concerns about ungrading, please don't hesitate to reach out. I'm excited to be on this journey with you and explore the possibilities of ungrading together. Let's make this a semester of meaningful learning and growth!
I know ungrading can be overwhelming for students who want to know exactly what to do to get an A. Below is a outline of what I think each later grade would look like in regards to attendance and assignments. These are my expectations, but you have a chance to explain to me why you feel you deserve a certain grade at the end of the semester and we will collaborate in coming up with your final grade.
