As a student, success often involves being interdependent and reaching out for assistance when needed. Your professors are one of the most valuable resources available to you during your academic journey. Not only can they offer guidance in your courses, but they also serve as potential references for jobs or graduate school, provide opportunities for internships or research, and offer support. Many students feel hesitant to approach professors due to fearing they may be bothering them or feeling uncomfortable asking for help. This assignment provides an opportunity to practice communication and building relationships with professors. My aim is that by engaging in this process, it becomes less intimidating and overwhelming for you in the future.
Step 1:
Schedule an appointment with a faculty member from a course in which you’re currently enrolled. Explain the purpose of your meeting when you make the appointment and let them know it should take approximately 15-20 minutes.
Step 2:
Prepare at least 4 - 8 questions. Some example questions are below but you can come up with additional ones as well:
Where did you go to school?
How did you get interested in your field (BIO, PSY, HIS, etc.)?
How long have you been teaching? What other jobs have you had?
What is your advice to me about how to be successful in your course?
What do you think makes a successful student?
What study strategies would you advise me to use?
Have you ever studied or taught abroad?
Why did you pick ASU to teach?
Have there ever been a student that really stood out to you and why?
Was teaching what you originally wanted to do?
What are some of your hobbies outside of teaching?
Step 3:
Write a full page (double spaced) reflection or create a minute long reflection video. Do not just answer these questions, write it in paragraph form or talk about in depth sharing these details.
Include the faculty member you chose, the date you met, and why.
How did you feel going into the meeting? After the meeting?
What did you learn about this person during the conversation?
Did your impression of them change at all from doing the conversation?
How was this experience for you? Any takeaways for meeting with future faculty?
