The English/Language Arts department seeks to create an environment that supports critical learners and fosters essential skills in literacy development. All elements of reading and writing are integrated to support and enhance student learning. Students are given many opportunities to read closely and analyze complex texts in various genres (informational, nonfiction, and fiction) as well as to craft and refine pieces in a variety of writing types (argumentative, narrative, and informational). We follow the “gradual release of responsibility” model of instruction, including explicit instruction, guided and independent practice.
