Each school is required to have a plan in place to respond to a wide variety of emergency situations to provide for the safety of all staff and students.
Fire drills occur in the fall and spring. By law, three drills are required each season. In the event of an actual fire emergency, families will be provided with a relevant update through email and social media as soon as it is safe to do so.
Practices for Lockdown, Hold and Secure, Shelter In Place, and Emergency Evacuation are held in consultation with our Belleville Police partners, and communicated in advance to students and families.
If an evacuation is required, students will walk via Palmer Road to our shelter site at Sir James Whitney School for the Deaf, 350 Dundas St. West.
During a Lockdown, students and staff must not use cell phones or social media. This helps protect the police response and prevents information about the lockdown, including the location or actions of students, staff, or police, from being shared with anyone who may pose a threat.
If a Lockdown occurs, families will recieve communication through email as soon as it is safe to do so.
We take student and staff safety very seriously. When assessing a potential risk, we take a precautionary approach. This may mean initially implementing a higher level of response and adjusting it as more reliable information becomes available.
