Land Acknowledgement
We acknowledge the land on which we are gathered is part of the traditional territory of the Haudenosaunee, Anishinaabe and Wendat people. These First Nations agreed to mutual sharing obligations and responsibilities as stewards of the land and water. Today these responsibilities and obligations extend to all Peoples.
Why do we acknowledge Indigenous Peoples Territories?
• Land acknowledgements mark a small but essential step toward reconciliation.
• To show respect for and recognize the First Peoples of the territory; their history, culture and perspectives.
• It's about thinking; what happened in the past and what changes can be made going forward in order to further the reconciliation process.
• Acknowledge and make visible, the Indigenous people who have been silenced, invisible, and marginalized yet are the original peoples and caretakers of this land, territory and ecology.
