In this course Dr. Michael Goheen examines the identity of the church according to the Bible and then considers the implications of this identity for the church’s mission. Beginning with the concept of a missional community in the OT, Goheen traces God’s work among His people into the NT community of believers and offers perspective on how the ministries of today’s church can be structured to fulfill God’s calling.
Dr. Bev Hislop provides strategies to improve pastoral care to women. The course examines the biblical portrayal of women, considers the effect of physiological and psychological differences between men and women on pastoral care, and offers a profile of effective shepherding of women.
In Theology of Everyday Life, Dr. Daniel Doriani shows how theology can inform social and personal life. From eating and playing, to friendship and weddings, this course looks at the importance of developing a deeper sense of the relevance of Scripture and Christian ethics to physical and relational life. Reflecting deeply on what the Bible has to say about various everyday topics, Doriani gives rich ethical guidance and provides tools to help you find insight from Scripture.
In this course, Jeff Struecker outlines the foundational elements of the chaplaincy and how to discern if it is right for you. Learn about the responsibilities and requirements of this calling and the unique settings that chaplains serve in, such as the military, health care, disaster relief, and more. Struecker then turns to Scripture for leadership training, looking at ten key figures, including Abraham, David, Esther, Paul, and Jesus. He identifies a list of leadership and shepherding qualities to help you lead and care for others as Christ leads and cares for you.
In this course, Jeff Struecker combines specific skill set training with theological training. Learn how to build relationships when you’re in a new location, listen and communicate in a way that promotes safety and healing, and assess an individual’s unique needs when they come to you for help. Struecker also describes what an incarnational ministry looks like from a chaplain's perspective and what outcomes you can expect, providing examples throughout.
In this course Dr. Daniel Doriani looks at Christian ethics through the lens of the Ten Commandments. He shows how each of the ethical principles interacts with the rest of the Bible and affects our lives today. Doriani also examines the history and purpose of Christian ethics and surveys other religions and their ethical systems.
Pastors care for a soul in the way a doctor cares for a body. In his course The Care of Souls (PC211) Harold Senkbeil invites a new generation of pastors to form the godly habits and practical wisdom needed to minister to the hearts and souls of those committed to their care. Drawing on his award-winning book The Care of Souls: Cultivating a Pastor’s Heart, Senkbeil helps remind pastors of the essential calling of the ministry: preaching and living out the Word of God while orienting others in the same direction. He offers practical and fruitful advice—born out of his five decades as a pastor—that will benefit both new pastors and those with years in the pulpit.
In Biblical Principles for Diversity and Reconciliation in Ministry (PC255), Walter R. Strickland II discusses the importance of developing a multicultural vision of every tribe, tongue, and nation in your ministry. Dr. Strickland starts by laying out biblical and theological foundations for why diversity is important. From there, he describes three levels of racial bias and talks about how to develop a diversity plan. Dr. Strickland gives important practical tips for diversity and reconciliation in various church ministries and talks about how to address hot topics relating to race.
The Church has a crucial role in being an answer to the hope that’s within us on this volatile issue in this country. This course will provide you with some tools and theological categories to begin not only to understand why we should pursue racial reconciliation and diversity but also to give you some skills and tips for how to go about it.
