Reflection Questions, Refugee
1. What or whose perspective did you consider as a result of reading this book? I considered three kid's perspectives. Josef, a Jewish boy fleeing from Berlin in 1938, Isabel, a Cuban Girl travelling over the ocean in a makeshift boat to go to the US in 1994, and Mahmoud, a Syrian boy escaping to Germany in 2015.
2. What did you learn about human migration and why people move? There can be many reasons for migration, but in this book, it was mainly war. but even then, different types of war. Mahmoud was fleeing from a civil war, Josef from the Nazis, and Isabel from an unjust president.
3. Would you recommend this book to a classmate? Tell them why or why not by giving them your favorite parts and highlights, or specific reasons why they may not want to read it. It honestly depends on what genres they like. Refugee is a historical fiction thriller, and definitely gets intense at some points. my favorite moments are when the author ties all three story lines together, like Mahmoud moving in with Josef's (then elderly) little sister.
4. What proof do you have that you met our learning targets? (Share a 5 sentence summary of your book or a Task Card Reflection) Refugee has three storylines, so I'll summarize one of them. Isabel sets off with her family and her best friend Ivan, in a makeshift boat, fleeing from their oppressive president, Fidel Castro. After travelling for a day, their engine breaks down, and they see a huge tanker ship headed straight for them. they escape, and reach the shores of the Bahamas, where they are given medicine for Isabel's pregnant mother before continuing their journey. the baby starts to come, and their journey becomes all too real when Ivan is killed by sharks. They make it to Miami, where they hit a small roadblock with the American coastgaurd, but, against the odds, they are allowed in, and Isabel has a new baby brother.
