Victor Example
One important choice that Victor makes is when he accepts Paul as a new player on the Tangerine soccer team. For instance, during the team’s first battle against Palmetto Middle School, Paul is asked to play forward even though he’s trained as a goalie. Despite the fact that he misses a kick, Paul plays with the same intensity as Victor and Tino and even gets physical with his opponent. Clearly Paul’s passion for beating Palmetto in his first game impresses Victor because he tells Paul after the game, “I saw you playing hard out there...if you’re gonna play with us, then you’re gonna play with us...you got brothers to back you up. Nobody’s gonna mess with you” (Bloor 124). Victor makes this decision to accept Paul he sees Paul's team effort and Paul's desire to win and he respects it. This acceptance from the captain of the soccer team has an enormous impact on Paul because it helps him gain confidence. For example, throughout the course of their season, they have an undefeated record, and Paul writes that their opponents “are beaten by their own fear before their game even begins” (170). Paul continues, “This is a feeling that I have never known before…” (170). By being accepted by Victor and the team, Paul who has often felt afraid throughout the novel, feels empowered. This is evidence that the choice had a lasting impact on Paul because this is the start of what gives him the strength to confront his parents and even Erik.
