All students have the right to come to school and not have the learning environment disrupted by other students. No student has the right to infringe on the rights of another student's learning. It is the responsibility of the classroom teacher to protect the learning environment for all students. The majority of teachers are using the first portion of class time for instruction, review or other important matters. When students continually ask to leave class during this time they are truly missing out on their own learning and disrupting the learning of other students. Many times when a student is allowed to leave class, upon return the student generally will ask what they missed. This cycle is undoubtedly very frustrating for the teacher who is working hard to prepare engaging lessons and students need to be present and engaged in these lessons.
“Focus on Learning Time" takes place during the first 45 minutes of class. During this time period, no students are allowed to leave the classroom, unless they are in medical need. Teachers are expected to use their professional judgement on what constitutes an emergency and what does not. All students should use the restroom during passing period, nutrition break, lunch break or during the last portion of class.
