This policy outlines the academic support and review procedures for high school students at AIS West campus. The goal is to provide students with the necessary resources and support to achieve their academic potential.
The ASR system relies on close parental communication and involvement. We believe that parents can have a very positive impact by ensuring that students come to school on time, prepared and having completed all assignments set. Parents should closely monitor student progress and work alongside teachers to support students.
The academic support system is based on a three-tiered model:
Tier 1: Universal support
Students whose termly report shows an F in any subject for the first time are placed on Tier 1 Academic Support and Review (ASR). Tier 1 students receive:
Proactive interventions: Classroom teachers will implement evidence-based strategies and interventions to address common learning challenges.
Differentiated Instruction: Teachers will provide instruction that is tailored to the needs of individual students.
Small-group support: Teachers may provide small-group support within the classroom for students who require additional assistance.
Students are able to contact the SST for support and advice.
Upon teacher request, students in Tier 1 ASR may be required to attend after school tutoring on campus in the subject they need to pass.
Tier 2: Targeted Support
Students who receive two or more Fs in a term are placed on Tier 2 ASR.
Tier 2 students receive:
Targeted interventions: Students who require more intensive support will receive targeted interventions, such as small-group tutoring, after-school tutoring, or specialized instructional strategies.
Progress monitoring: Student progress will be closely monitored by the Student Success Team (SST) or the HS administrators to assess the effectiveness of interventions.
Students may not be eligible to participate in school trips and visits.
Tier 3: Intensive Support
Students who receive three Fs or more in a consecutive term are placed on Tier 3.
Tier 3 students receive:
Individualized support plans: Students with significant learning challenges may require individualized education plans to address their specific needs.
Specialized services: Students may be referred to specialized services, by the counselors such as speech therapy, occupational therapy, or counseling.
Students may not be eligible to participate in school trips and visits
This tier involves targeted intervention and enhanced parental involvement and liaison with the SST who will ensure that targeted interventions and progress reviews are consistent throughout the term.
Continued Tier 3: Targeted Support
When students on Tier 3 continue to fail three or more subjects in the next consecutive term, they will receive the academic support outlined in Tier 2 and 3.
Students on this tier may have to take summer credit recovery courses and ultimately be retained in their current grade for another academic year.
By passing all subjects in a term, students on the ASR program will be withdrawn from ASR.
Please note that a student failing one or more subjects at the end of the academic year, may have to take summer credit recovery courses regardless of the ASR Tier they are in.
Regular reviews: Student progress will be reviewed regularly by the administrators and/or the SST to determine the effectiveness of support interventions.
Data analysis: Data on student achievement, attendance, and behavior will be analyzed to inform decision-making.
Adjustments as needed: Support interventions will be adjusted as necessary to ensure students are receiving the appropriate level of support.
Parent involvement: Parents will be actively involved in the academic support process and will be kept informed of their child's progress.
Collaboration: Teachers, the SST and administrators will work together to ensure that students receive the necessary support.
Student privacy: Student information will be kept confidential in accordance with applicable AISE school policy and Ministry of Education laws and regulations.
After-school programs: The school may offer after-school programs to provide additional academic support and enrichment opportunities.
Tutoring services: Students may have access to tutoring services, either through the school or external providers arranged by parents.
Counseling services: School counselors and the Academic Support Tutor are available to provide academic counseling and support.
This policy provides a framework for delivering academic support to high school students at AIS West. By implementing a tiered support system, the school can ensure that all students have the opportunity to succeed academically.
