The increasing use of Artificial Intelligence (AI) tools in education presents both opportunities and challenges. This policy aims to ensure the responsible and ethical use of AI tools while promoting academic integrity and student learning.
AI Tools: Generative AI tools, paraphrasing tools, and other technologies that can be used to create or modify academic work.
Acceptable Use: Use of AI tools for research, organization, and inspiration, with proper citation and disclosure of their use.
Unacceptable Use: Using AI tools to generate content that is solely the product of the AI without human contribution, claiming AI-generated content as original work, or using AI tools to alter content in a way that misrepresents information.
Faculty Expectations: Instructors will explicitly state in their course syllabi whether and how AI tools can be used in their courses. This could include specific permitted uses, citation requirements for AI-generated content, or a complete ban on using AI for specific assignments.
Student Responsibilities:
Students are responsible for understanding the instructor's expectations regarding AI use in each course.
Students must disclose the use of any AI tools in their work as instructed by the faculty member.
Students retain full responsibility for the content and originality of their work, even when using AI tools.
Permitted Uses:
Students may use AI tools for tasks like brainstorming ideas, organizing research materials, or paraphrasing existing sources (with proper citation of the original source).
Students may use AI tools to translate languages (except in the subjects of Arabic, Spanish or French) or check for grammatical errors, provided they review and understand the changes made.
Unacceptable Uses:
Submitting AI-generated content as original work without human contribution is strictly prohibited.
Using AI tools to fabricate or manipulate data is a violation of academic integrity.
Using AI tools to complete assessments intended to measure individual student knowledge or skills is not allowed.
Consequences of Violations: Violations of this policy will be treated as plagiarism or academic dishonesty and may result in disciplinary actions, including failing grades, suspension, retention and disqualification from graduation.
Implementation
This policy will be disseminated to all faculty, students, and staff through the school website, academic handbook, and relevant training sessions.
Faculty will be encouraged to develop strategies for detecting AI-generated content in student work.
The school may consider using plagiarism detection software that can identify AI-generated text.
This policy will be reviewed and updated periodically to reflect evolving technologies and best practices.
Conclusion: By promoting responsible AI use, this policy fosters a learning environment that prioritizes intellectual integrity, critical thinking skills, and student ownership of their academic work.
