As an AIS High School Student, I will conduct myself in a respectful and ethical manner, demonstrating academic integrity at all times.
The foundation of AIS is respect - for others, for ourselves and for our environment. We demonstrate respect by
Using inclusive language
Kindly greeting each other in the halls
Maintaining an appropriate volume/noise level when conversing in public places such as hallways
Offering appropriate social cues indicating we are actively listening to who is speaking.
Common courtesy must be demonstrated at all times. Kindness and decency lead to success both inside and out of the classroom.
AIS believes that all students are able to learn when provided with appropriate instruction and a safe and orderly environment. Creating such an educational setting requires a comprehensive program of instruction, written and consistently enforced expectations for discipline, and the cooperative efforts of students, parents/guardians, school staff and the community.
Every student at AIS has the right to high-quality education.
Each teacher has the responsibility to teach; each student has the right and the responsibility to learn. No student has the right to interfere with the teaching and learning process.
Each teacher has classroom policies to support the best possible educational environment.
Respect, common sense, and courtesy are the foundations of the relationship between student and teacher.
When students demonstrate poor choices that don’t meet behavioral expectations, those incidents are formally documented in the form of a “referral” or “Powerschool Log Entry”. The Student Success Team monitors these referrals to work to find solutions that ensure future behavioral expectations are met.
Examples of Behaviors that negatively impact the physical or psychological safety of the individual or larger community include and are not limited to:
Destruction of property (school and/or student)
Failure to report to assigned class (truancy), detention, assembly, meeting, etc.
Disrespect to AIS teachers and/or staff, including failure to follow clear and reasonable requests (to include harassment of a teacher or staff member)
Fighting (verbally and or physically)
Smoking (including e-cigarettes and vapes)
Excessive disruptive behavior (habitual defiance, willful disobedience)
Blatant disobedience (abusive, belligerent behavior)
Intimidation, harassment, or bullying, including cyber bullying of peers or staff members
Unauthorized use of technology/computers (major – to include but not limited to virus activity, profanity, obscenity, etc.)
Sexual harassment of teacher, staff member or student/student’s family
Violations of the mobile phone policy and repeated use of unauthorized electronic devices in class
Refusal/failure to follow a staff member’s clear requests and/or instructions
Solutions: To be determined by the Leadership Team depending on the severity of the situation. Solutions could include but are not limited to communication with parents, referral to counseling, placement on behavior probation, detention, in-school suspension (ISS), out-of-school suspension (OSS), formal discipline committee, recommendation to the director for exclusion/expulsion, or involvement of external authorities.
At AIS-West High School we believe that every student has the right to learn in an environment that allows them to perform at their highest level. It is vital that teachers are able to provide engaging lessons and ensure student understanding every day for every student. We know and understand that every parent has an expectation that we provide the highest quality education possible for their child.
When a student has proven that they are not able to work in the classroom setting without interrupting the rights of the other students' learning environment he/she will be removed from the regular classroom setting for a minimum of 5 days. Parents will be notified and required to meet with the high school principal or vice principal before the student will be released from the Making Good Decisions Program. The meeting can be held in person, over the phone, or via zoom.
Students will report to the In School Suspension (ISS) room daily no later than 8am and will be dismissed at 2:45 p.m.
Students will be given the opportunity to purchase food for the nutrition break and lunch at a different time than their peers. However, the nutrition break and lunch will be held in the ISS room.
Students will be given work from each of their teachers through Google Classroom or other means.
Students may visit by each of the teachers they have scheduled for that day to check for understanding of assignments after school.
Each day the student will have the opportunity to earn 2 points, one point for completed work and the other point for good behavior. Once the student has earned 10 points they will have earned the privilege of returning to the regular classroom setting.
If the student does not earn both points each day another day will be added to their stay in the ISS room until they reach 10 points.
Multiple visits to the Making Good Decisions Program may result in further disciplinary actions including out of school suspension or expulsion.
The Behavior Probation process is designed to manage student behavior in a way that is structured, transparent and holds students, parents and the school accountable. It is also designed to include social and emotional support to students including meeting with our counselors and the development of improvement plans. It is always our goal to support and help students grow and improve so that they can reach higher levels of success in school and in life. It is also always our goal to work closely with parents to ensure that there is a strong connection between home and school for our students.
