Art at Tamworth Enterprise College

Art, in any form, can give people emotions that can lift up your spirit and make you more driven than ever.
This is why a broad art educational experience is so important. With the art that we are surrounded by, whether it's a painting, sculpture or photographs can have a huge impact on our mood and emotions. Art enhances fine motor skills, hand-eye coordination, problem solving skills, lateral thinking, complex analysis and critical thinking skills.Art also teaches many important qualities such as listening, observing and responding to multiple perspectives. Having an appreciation for art also helps us to develop an appreciation for each other and how we are all unique in our own way.
Intent:
Through the art curriculum:
Students develop their understanding about the purpose of works of art to help them to communicate ideas, such as inpolitically, spiritually, or philosophically.
Students will independently be able to generate works of art that may show emotions and/or link to representation fromtheir learning developing their Self-expression.Students will have the opportunity to create their own style of working through risk-taking activities allowing them tounderstand the meaning of perseverance through differentiated outcomes.
Students become proficient in drawing, painting, sculpture and other art, craft and design techniques by building fromtheir observational skills.
Students will gain knowledge about great artists, craft makes and designers and understand the historical culturaldevelopment of their art forms.Students will understand the importance of refinement within their work as an important aspect to develop their criticalthinking and therefore personal development.
Implementation:
Our age related expectations build upon the key stage two programme of study and synthesise KS4 GCSE Art assessment objectives. Our projects of work our designed to achieve the aims of the national curriculum where pupils are expected to produce creative work, exploring their ideas and recording their experiences. In order to support this, we have split our AGE Related Expectations into key skill areas that are met at least once during KS3.All years are expected to build on the formal elements of art and use their refinement skills as a way to develop their skills within each of these areas. The expectation is that pupils complete 1 project per term. However, there is flexibility with the planning to allow projects to take slightly longer/less.
Each project has been designed with a theme to best suit the specific key skill area to meet those specific age relatedexpectation within the planning.
Further extension tasks embed the importance of refinement within art and could lead to more individually developedideas.
By the end of year 9 pupils with have met all age related expectations by building on previous learning by making connections.
Completing key stage 3 will have allowed all pupils to have explored a wide range of materials and processes to helpwith their choices for GCSE options. All pupils will have the skills to build on at key stage 4 to ensure they achieve their best possible achievement.
To summarise by the end of key stage 3 pupils will have completed a range of topics and themes that will have engaged, inspired and challenged all pupils. As pupils progress, they should be able to think critically and develop a more rigorous understanding of art and design.
