Modern Foreign Languages: Spanish

At Tamworth Enterprise College, we firmly believe that languages will play an important role in future careers, and, by studying another language, pupils are preparing themselves to contribute to the continually growing global community.

CURRICULUM statement

Intent

Our curriculum aims to enable pupils to communicate in another language, increasing both self-awareness of their own language and oracy skills. We empower students to understand and respond to Spanish, expressing ideas and thoughts relevant to their interests and needs. We intend to expose students to other cultures, fostering their curiosity and deepening their understanding of the world. We aim to build their respect and tolerance for others, both in our local community and the wider world.

We focus on developing skills in listening, reading, speaking and writing, building up their confidence and independence. Through our curriculum and extra-curricular activities, we provide opportunities for students to develop their communication through authentic sources, to speak with increased confidence and to acquire strong leadership skills.

Implementation

Our Spanish Secondary Curriculum is structured as a 5-year linear programme that builds on the depth and breadth of linguistic knowledge and is based on cognitive science and a spiral curriculum model.

The curriculum maps the development of key ideas within a strand from Year 7 to 11 ensuring that the learning journey is cohesive and that each new element builds on the appropriate conceptual components.

Impact

We monitor the progress of our students through regular assessments. Every half term pupils receive feedback based on their speaking performance in class and are further assessed in two more skills (listening, reading or writing). Students are given the opportunity twice each half term to respond to feedback, address misconceptions and identify ‘next steps’ in their learning.
