The ACS Athens “K-12” Physical Education Department provides the opportunity for all students to learn about and become more aware of movement, strategies, teamwork, problem solving and health-related fitness. Each of these areas is addressed in the American Society of Health and Physical Educators (SHAPE AMERICA) standards, which place an important emphasis on teaching the whole student. The ACS Athens Physical Education Department strives to safely provide the means for students to enjoy physical activity, become more confident in their abilities, increase their knowledge of health-related fitness, and help them find ways to continue to be physically active so as to maintain lifelong wellness.
Through regular fitness activities, individual and team games, direct instruction, group discussions and team-building activities, students will meet the following program objectives:
In this class, students in grades 9-12, are provided the opportunity to interact in cooperative learning situations and to develop socialization skills. A variety of activities are offered to expose students to different skills related to the sport. Team sports also give some of our students a chance to participate in a sport activity they normally would not. Team Sports consists of various team games and activities including, but not limited to, Basketball, Track and Field, European Handball, Water Polo, Softball, Volleyball, Soccer, Lacrosse, Field Hockey, Ultimate Frisbee.
This class is designed for students in grades 9-12, with a primary goal to improve fitness, strength and to develop an aptitude in a variety of individual sports. Lifetime Activities consists of activities that students can do on their own and can continue to do throughout their lives, either individually, or with a partner/small group. Units in this section may include, but are not limited to, Fitness, Weight Training, Olympic Sports, Paddle Sports, Aerobics, Dance, Cardio Fitness, Wall Climbing, Racket Sports.
