Our Literacy curriculum supports pupils in becoming confident readers, enthusiastic writers and effective communicators. Across the school, we use a range of high‑quality programmes and approaches to develop skills in reading, writing, talking and listening.
Across the school, we use the Talk for Writing approach, which helps pupils internalise language patterns through oral storytelling, model texts and shared writing. This provides a strong structure for developing creativity, vocabulary and writing stamina.
In P4–P7, classes are also trialling the use of CYPIC writing progression tools to support clear next steps, consistency and improved writing outcomes.
Our reading provision is tailored to support progression at each stage:
P1–P3: Pupils learn through the Read Write Inc. phonics programme, which provides systematic, structured teaching of sounds, blending, fluency and comprehension.
P4-P7: From P4-P7, classes will learn the Super Six comprehension strategies to help them understand, discuss and analyse texts effectively.
Interventions: We use Nessy to support targeted literacy intervention for pupils who benefit from additional phonics, spelling and reading practice. Learners have also started using Reading Eggs this term to support reading fluency, comprehension, vocabulary development and personalised practice.
Our approach to spelling progresses in line with pupils' developmental needs:
P1–P3: Spelling is taught through the Read Write Inc. phonics programme, supporting children to link sounds and spellings securely.
P4–P7: Classes use the Wraparound spelling programme, which builds on prior phonics knowledge and supports pupils to develop accurate spelling strategies and understanding of spelling patterns.
Listening and Talking skills are developed across all stages of the school through meaningful, real‑life contexts. Pupils have regular opportunities to share their ideas, express opinions and communicate with confidence.
Children build these skills through a variety of activities, including:
Personal projects and presentations
IDL (Interdisciplinary Learning) topics that encourage discussion, questioning and collaborative problem‑solving
Group tasks, debates and class discussions
Storytelling, role play and drama activities
Peer sharing and feedback opportunities
