As part of our commitment to providing a consistent learning experience for all children, staff worked together to develop a shared understanding of what effective learning looks like in every classroom at Abbotswell School. Through professional discussion and collaboration, we identified three key promises that support all learners to succeed.
To make these expectations clear and meaningful for our children, we created a child-friendly Learning Promise which is displayed in every classroom. It reminds pupils that they should know what they are learning and what success looks like, receive the right level of support and challenge, and use feedback to help them improve and grow.
Our Learning Promise helps create a shared language for learning across the school, empowering children to take an active role in their education and supporting our aim of ensuring every learner feels motivated, challenged and successful.
Key Rights we are supporting:
⭐ Article 28 – Right to Education
Children have the right to an education that helps them learn and succeed. Our Learning Promise helps children understand what they are learning and what success looks like.
⭐ Article 29 – Goals of Education
Education should help children develop their talents, abilities and confidence to their fullest potential. By providing the right support and challenge, we help every child to achieve and succeed.
⭐ Article 12 – Respect for Children's Views
Children have the right to express their views and be involved in decisions that affect them. The Learning Promise encourages children to understand their learning, reflect on feedback and take an active role in their progress.
⭐ Article 23 – Children with Disabilities
Children who need additional support have the right to receive it so they can participate fully. Our commitment to helping every child "learn in their own way" ensures learning is inclusive and accessible for all.
Pupil voice helps shape our school expectations.
As part of our Caring Citizens topic, every class took part in discussions to review and refresh our school expectations. Children shared what they believe helps make Abbotswell School a safe, happy and respectful place to learn, play and grow.
The ideas from each class were collated and presented at a whole-school assembly, where pupils identified the key behaviours and values that matter most to them. Our pupil voice is important, and children felt that our expectations should reflect our MEERKAT Values.
Using the pupils' suggestions, we have created a set of expectations for the playground, concentration stations, corridors and peg areas, and dinner hall. These expectations are linked closely to our Abbotswell aims and MEERKAT values, helping everyone understand how we can work together to create a positive environment for all.
We are incredibly proud of the thoughtful contributions made by our pupils and look forward to seeing these expectations in action across the school every day.
