First week of school! (August 2026)

Primary 3 have had a really positive first week of school where we have been mainly getting to know each other, and reminding ourselves of the school expectations.

The pupils have done very well in settling into their routines in the classroom and in the main have been getting on well with one another.

This week, we have started reading 'The BFG' and have done some tasks relating to the novel. We have also done some maths activities and games to get back into numerical ways of thinking. In addition, we have worked on our Class Charter to establish our rules and responsibilities in the classroom and for the school in general.

Class Charter

This is the Primary 3 Class Charter. We discussed in groups, then as a class which rules and responsibilities we should follow in Abbotswell.

The pupils then drew pictures of the various rules and responsibilites which included: Tidying up after ourselves, walking sensibly around the school, including other pupils at break and lunchtime and no fighting / arguing.

Term 1 Overview

Literacy

Reading

Children will be given a reading book each Monday and Wednesday. Children will be supported with their recall, comprehension and inference skills as well as working on fluency, phonemic awareness and phonics. Children are encouraged to further develop their reading skills at home as well as in school.

Writing

Children will follow the Cypic writing scheme, with a particular focus on openers followed by a focus on using connectives. Through this learning, the children will be given the tools to make their writing more interesting and engaging.

Spelling

Each week, the pupils will be introduced to a new spelling sound / word. They will learn strategies to help them to remember how to sound out and spell this sound / word. We will use Elkonin boxes and diacritical marking to assist with learning these and pupils will be encouraged to learn these at home too.

Listening and Talking

Throughout the term, children will be encouraged to develop their listening and talking skills through paired, group and class discussions. They will also participate in Buddy Time with the P4 class to encourage and develop social skills and to learn from those a little older than themselves. There will also be opportunities for presentations – of a formal and informal nature. These activities will help to build confidence, resilience and communicating in a respectful manner with one another.

Numeracy

This term, we will continue to develop our numeracy knowledge and understanding through a variety of engaging and interesting practical learning activities.

CLIC

Children will continue to learn numeracy through CLIC (Counting, Learn Its, It's Nothing New and Calculation) sessions and tests to help to develop confidence in numeracy.

Weekly CLIC targets will be posted on the website and it is encouraged that children could practise their learning at home too.

Topic Maths – Shapes and Patterns

P3 will continue to expand their knowledge and understanding of 2D shapes, 3D objects and tiling patterns.

P3 will explore number patterns in more detail and explain the rule associated with a number pattern. They will look at counting forwards and backwards in 2s, 5s, 10s to 100.

Health and Wellbeing

This term, we will be focusing on our mental, emotional, social and physical wellbeing.

The children have started doing their daily check-ins and are into the routine of doing this. They know that they can change their check-in through the course of the day to go with the emotion they are feeling. We will learn how feelings can affect behaviour and relationships and help to develop strategies to regulate their emotions. Health and Wellbeing learning is linked strongly with the GMWP framework, SHANARRI indicators and the UNCRC, ensuring that children feel safe, included, respected and successful in school.

P3 will have RADs on a Tuesday afternoon with Fran and PE on a Thursday morning with Mrs Forbes.

Science

This term, we will be learning about how water can change from one form to another.

The children will be learning about predictions and carrying out experiments. We will also investigate the Earth, Moon and the Sun, and the dangers of looking directly at the Sun. Through discussion, observation and practical activities, the children will develop their enquiry skills and deepen their understanding of the world around them.

Cross Curricular

Over the 3 weeks of the Caring Citizens topic, P3s will look at: developing their Class Charter, looking at UNCRC and the rights of the child, why it is important that children have a voice. We will link with HWB topics and discuss looking after our physical and mental wellbeing, how others can help us, and why treating people fairly and equally is so important in our society. We need to understand that every individual is unique, and that we respect them, even if we can’t always get along, or agree with one another.

The children will have many opportunities to participate in discussions about how we can continue to make the classroom, other areas of the school and areas of the community positive places to be where we feel safe, respected and included.

As part of our Around the World topic, we are going to look at Spain. We had a discussion about which countries we are interested in, and subsequently did a class vote, and Spain was the most popular. We are going to look at the location of the Spain on the map, famous landmarks, animals and culture. We will compare Spain with Scotland and we will be researching types of food dishes, cultural events and architecture in Spain.
