MAKE-UP WORK

MAKE-UP WORK (501.10)

It is to the student’s benefit to make up work missed for whatever reason of absence. When the student returns to school following an absence, he/she should contact each of his/her teachers to see what work he/she has missed. The obligation to make up the work belongs to the student, not the teacher.

Students will turn in their assignments when due as determined by the classroom teacher. Students will get credit for whatever they turn in to the teacher. Being absent is the only excuse for not turning in an assignment. Schoolwork missed because of an excused absence must be made up within two times the number of days absent, not to exceed five days. The time allowed for make-up work may be extended at the discretion of the principal.

If an assignment is given before the student is absent and due on the day the student is absent, then it is to be turned in on the day the student returns to school. If an assignment is given on Tuesday and the students are told it is due by the beginning of class on Wednesday, then it is to be turned in to the teacher as stated. If the assignment isn't turned in as required, a zero should be entered into the grade book. It is up to individual teachers to accept late assignments with grade reductions. Excuses, such as "I left it at home," or "I can't find it," are not acceptable.

Students absent for all reasons except truancy or skipping are to be given an opportunity to make up work missed. Where a test or major assignment was due on the day of truancy or skipping, make-up should be allowed only if the failure to allow it would have disproportionate impact on the student's term grade. In such cases, a reduction of the test or assignment grade may be permissible.
