How to Properly
Document New Devices
Including the how to locate the part numbers for replacement parts
When documenting a new device. Please type all of the information that you will be getting out and along with pictures of the part numbers/parts and email it to Procurement@therepairdepot.com. Thank you.
General Outline
When TRD receives a new device to repair, we will not always have the device documented, or part numbers for the specific device. This guide will help you better understand what you need to look for and how to properly document a new device to add to our system.
Before getting to the part numbers, we will need to make sure to properly document the Device Name, Make, Model, Version, Etc. See “Device Type” for more information.
Included in this Training Guide will include how to find and locate Part Numbers on the following device. Even though these devices below are not all the devices we have worked on, these will give good examples of what to look for and how to locate Part Numbers. See “Part Numbers” for more information.
Acer
HP
Toshiba
Dell
Apple
Asus
Lenovo/IBM
Sony
.Device Type
When a new device needs to be added to the system for receiving, it FIRST must go through Justin Koehlar with picture verification, before the device is added to the portal.
Take a picture of the device model, example below, and send it to Justin@therepairdepot.com and Procurement@therepairdepot.com
DO NOT PROCEED with receiving in the device until the device name/model is verified and added to the system. You will get a confirmation reply once the device type is added.
The device type refers to the make, model, version, color, memory size, etc of the device. When documenting a new device is is best to get a picture/pictures of the device info which is usually a sticker on the bottom of the device, either on the bottom plate or under the battery (if the battery is removable).
You will need to take multiple pictures of the following before taking the device apart: Front, Back, Sides, Bottom
When getting information to send to the Purchasing Team or Inventory Team, they will need the following information:
Example:
Device Name: Toshiba 5105-5702
Device Model/Part Number: PS511U-02WYJJ
Hard Drive Size: (Will probably have to take device apart for this)
Ram Size: (If applicable)
Color: (Pictures will help with this as well)
Above is just an example, but this would be the information you would need to document for the Purchasing team to make sure they order the right parts for the right devices.
The first step you will need to take is to locate your HP spare part number. This number was created by HP and placed on all of their parts for the purpose of helping to find the correct and compatible replacement part. This number is sometimes difficult to locate, and some parts may have multiple part numbers on them, leading to extra confusion. Using this page, I will show you how to find and identify the correct HP part number for certain parts.
Here is an example of an HP spare parts sticker:
The HP spare parts sticker can be almost anywhere on the motherboard. Sometimes it may require you to remove the motherboard fully from the laptop to find your part number. One of the more common locations, which is much easier and less of a hassle to locate, is behind the RAM on your hp motherboard.
Here is an example of that placement:
The easiest way to find out which number belongs to the motherboard is to visit HP Part Surfer and search for the part number in there. The extra HP part numbers are most often for the other detachable parts on the motherboard.
Here is an example where there are 2 extra part numbers on the motherboard. One is for the modem and the other is for the express card slot.
Here is another example of a part with multiple part numbers. In this case, there is also a model number for this DVD Drive. I always recommend that you replace HP parts using HP part numbers. Different laptop manufacturers may use the same model of DVD drive. If you replace using the model number, you may find that despite being the same part, it might have trouble fitting into your laptop, or come with a different faceplate. If HP's part surfer can not find a part number, like 391649-6C0, you can Google the part number to find a replacement.
You may find that some parts, like inverters, do not always have hp part numbers on them. In these cases, you must correctly identify the manufacturers part numbers on the part to find a compatible replacement. Here is an inverter that does not include an HP part number.
You can see the outlined part numbers on this inverter are YNV-W10 and 19.21072.101. Both of these numbers will find you a suitable replacement. You may find that upon looking for one to purchase, you see it listed for a different laptop model than your own. Do not worry, some parts are used in many different laptops and are compatible in many different models. As long as you match the part number you are replacing, the part you purchase will be compatible.
.
The first step you will need to take is to locate your Toshiba part number. Toshiba part numbers have a few different formats, however the most common will resemble something like K000004080,V000068790, P000346800, etc.
Here is an example of a Toshiba part number sticker:
Toshiba part numbers on motherboards are most often located underneath one of the DIMM slots of RAM. If you are unable to find it there, you may have to remove the motherboard from the laptop in order to locate the sticker. Make sure that the sticker you are looking for is more directly on the motherboard and not on an attached part.
Here is an example of a Toshiba part number (V000095000) located above this RAM slot:
Here is another Toshiba part number (K000054390) located underneath where the hard drive would be located on the motherboard:
The easiest way to figure out which part number belongs to the motherboard is to simply Google the part number and look for related results. If the part number is giving you pictures and links to a part that is not the motherboard, then you know you do not have the correct part number. There can be multiple part numbers on the motherboard which are sometimes simply compatible part numbers or for attached parts.
Here is an example of a Toshiba motherboard with multiple part numbers:
You can see the Toshiba part number V000068790 and the motherboard part number 6050A2101901. I always recommend that you replace Toshiba parts using the Toshiba part number first if possible. If you are unable to locate a replacement using the Toshiba part number, then you should use the motherboard part number instead.
You may find that some parts, like hard drives, do not always have Toshiba part numbers on them. In these cases, you must correctly identify the manufacturers part numbers on the part to find a compatible replacement. Here is a hard drive that does not include a Toshiba part number:
You can see the outlined part number on this hard drive is MK1234GSX. This number will find you a suitable replacement. You may find that upon looking for one to purchase, you see it listed for a different laptop model than your own. Do not worry, some parts are used in many different laptops and are compatible in many different models. As long as you match the part number you are replacing, the part you purchase will be compatible.
.
The first step you will need to take is to locate your Dell part number. This number is sometimes difficult to locate, and some parts may have multiple part numbers on them, leading to extra confusion. Using this page, I will show you how to find and identify the correct HP part number for certain parts.
Here is an example of how to find the Dell part number on your Dell motherboard:
The Dell part number is hidden in the other string of numbers on this sticker. The part number of this motherboard is MD666. You can always find the dell part number immediately following the CN- on a dell part sticker.
Here is another example showing you how to find the dell part number.
The part number of this modem is K8735. You can see it following the DP/N as well as the CN- in this case. Dell part numbers are often represented after the "DP/N" on a part as well.
Dell part numbers on motherboards are most often located underneath one of the DIMM slots of RAM. If you are unable to find it there, you may have to remove the motherboard from the laptop to find the sticker. Make sure that the sticker you are looking for is more directly on the motherboard and not on an attached part.
Here is an example of a Dell Motherboard part number (H5935) located below this RAM slot:
The easiest way to figure out which dell part number belongs to the motherboard is to simply Google the part number and look for related results. If the part number is giving you pictures and links to a part that is not the motherboard, then you know you do not have the right part number. There can be multiple dell part numbers on the board for various other attached parts, such as, a modem, heat sink, express card cage, or a drive bay.
Here is an example of a dell motherboard with extra parts attached. Each have their own dell part number, the heat sink (2N403) and the modem (Y0231).
Here is a different example of a WiFi card with 2 part numbers:
In this case, there is also a Broadcom part number for the card. You can see the dell part number D9002, as well as the Broadcom model number BCM94318MPAGH. I always recommend that you replace Dell parts using the Dell part number first if possible. If you are unable to locate a replacement part using the Dell part number, then you should use the model number of a part instead.
You may find that some parts, like LCDs, do not always have Dell part numbers on them. In these cases, you must correctly identify the manufacturers part numbers on the part to find a compatible replacement. Here is a LCD that does not include a Dell part number.
You can see the outlined part number on this LCD are LP156WH1 (TL)(A3). This number will find you a suitable replacement. You may find that upon looking for one to purchase, you see it listed for a different laptop model than your own. Do not worry, some parts are used in many different laptops and are compatible in many different models. As long as you match the part number you are replacing, the part you purchase will be compatible.
Apple part numbers are not always available on every part you want to replace. In those cases, you must use a manufacturer part number to find a suitable replacement. Apple part numbers are generally listed in this format: 922-4641, 922-9601, 655-1115.
Here is an example of what you are looking for:
Asus part numbers are not always available on every part you wish to replace. In those cases, you must use a manufacturer part number to find a suitable replacement. Asus part numbers are generally listed in this format: 08-2CL310226. Or without the dash:08G20VL10207.
Here is an example of what you are looking for.
