The May 24, 2011 meeting was called to order at 7pm by President Brandon Hoving with 14 in attendance. After introductory notes, and a look a live phrased array data showing ongoing convection in Oklahoma at the time, we discussed plans for a social event in the summer, and a Saturday meeting in Lansing for our fall kickoff.
Vice President Nathan Jeruzal brought up the membership numbers and asked for volunteers for a website and membership committees. Secretary Rob Dale
mentioned the notes being submitted to the AMS for online publication, and
explained that the paperwork for our non-profit status has been submitted to the state (with some necessary corrections made after the first
attempt.) President Hoving presented the treasurer's report in Bill Marino's absence.
Rob Dale then gave a forecast briefing on the next day's severe weather threat, and offered hope for a hot Memorial Day even though the GFS was still calling for cool temperatures.
Brandon Hoving and T.J. Turnage of the National Weather Service Grand Rapids office were the main speakers for the night. They focused on the April southeast tornado outbreaks - presenting synoptic overviews, mesoscale analysis and a detailed look at Level II radar data from the event. Damage survey results were also included. During the talk there were good questions on severe weather indices, thunderstorm structure, and the like.
The meeting adjourned at 8:40pm. Next meeting will be September 17, 2011 at Michigan State University in East Lansing.
