President Warren Wheeler called the meeting to order at 7:10 PM. All of the board members were present with the exception of Cort Scholten, Vice President. The total attendance was twelve people.
William Marino gave the Treasurer’s report indicating total funds in our accounts of $969.25. He has since updated it to included monies that were spent on audio/visual equipment, a speaker’s dinner and new checks so the total funds on hand as of 13 September 2018 are $770.59. We also have a total of 25 paid members for this year, which is a record high for the club.
The winners of the summer forecast contest were announced as the following:
Warmest temperature, GRR -- Linda Paige
Warmest temperature, MKG -- Cassey Derry
Warmest temperature, LAN -- Linda Paige
90 degree days -- Jim Carpenter, Alex Montgomery
June 1 - Aug 31 precip total -- Kreigh Tomaszewski
Only one person who won was in attendance to receive a gift card. For the others to receive their cards, they need to be in attendance at the next meeting.
Our speaker for the evening was Eric Ellmaker, who has been a commercial pilot for 31 years. This is his second appearance before our group and he once again presented some beautiful slides of the weather he sees out his cockpit window, along with many interesting stories about his career in aviation. These were presented with his wonderful sense of humor.
Linda Paige raffled off one of Dr. Fujita’s books on tornadoes. The winner was a relatively new attendee, Bill DeVries.
The meeting was adjourned at 8:15 but we were then given a tour of the West Michigan Aviation Academy facility. In several of the rooms, there were aircraft suspended from the ceiling, much as in the Smithsonian Institute. One of these was Snoopy and his doghouse, which, believe it or not, actually can fly. This school is a superior example of focused education and discipline turning out highly qualified and motivated students.
