President Brandon Hoving called the meeting to order shortly after 7PM. All board members were present. A total of 13 members attended the meeting.
Treasurer William Marino reported cash on hand as of 8 November of $924. There are 16 paid members for the year 2017. Bill also gave a preview of what he expects for the coming winter in West Michigan. His forecast is that we will most likely see a colder than average winter with a good chance of more lake effect snowfall than last winter.
Warren announced the winners of the summer forecast contest. You can read the results at this link: https://sites.google.com/a/skywatch.org/swmi/forecast-contest/summer-2017
President Brandon Hoving called one our members, Dave McIntyre, up to the podium to give a belated congratulation on his winning the Thomas Jefferson award in 2015. This award is to honor cooperative weather observers for unusual and outstanding achievements in the field of meteorological observations. It is the highest award the NWS presents to volunteer observers and out of approximately 12,000 observers across the United States, no more than 5 can receive this award in any year. Great job Dave!
The remainder of the program included discussions and photos from members who witnessed the total solar eclipse this past summer. In addition, there were discussions with photos of two recent flooding episodes. One was of the Kalamazoo flooding in October where close to 15 inches of rain fell during the month just southwest of that city with about ½ of that amount falling on the 14th and 15th.
Even worse flooding occurred between Big Rapids and Saginaw on June 22nd and 23rd when around 4” – 8” of rain fell in 6 hours producing $90 million dollars in damage to infrastructure in Isabella County alone.
You can see photos of both of these flooding events at: https://sites.google.com/a/skywatch.org/swmi/presentations/2017-11-08.
Thanks to Brandon Hoving and Linda Paige for getting these posted.
Our next meeting will be held Monday, December 18 with Maria Molina from CMU talking about hurricanes Harvey and Irma from this past summer. Location of the meeting will be announced soon.
