President Warren Wheeler called the meeting to order at 7:15 PM. All of the board members with the exception of Linda Paige were present. Total attendance was 11 people.
Our speaker for the evening was Dr. Maria Molina. This is the third time she has spoken to our group. Her topic was about her move from broadcasting to research with her perspectives on her career evolution and on women in the Science Technology Engineering and Math (STEM) fields, although the medical profession is now generally included under this umbrella too.
Maria was born in Nicaragua but grew up in south Florida. She earned a Bachelor of Science degree in meteorology from Florida State in 2008.
She worked for The Fox News Channel from 2010 to 2016. While there, she received a Masters of Arts degree from Columbia University in climate and society and has just recently received her PhD from Central Michigan University on season to season variability of tornadoes.
She will be leaving Michigan in August to pursue a two year post doc fellowship at the National Center for Atmospheric Research (NCAR) where in addition to her research she will continue to pursue her passion for increasing participation of women in the STEM fields.
Just this past January, Maria was able to experience a trip of a lifetime to the West Antarctic Peninsula where she had the thrill of seeing fields of literally thousands of Adélie penguins and huge icebergs up close.
At the end of the meeting, treasurer Bill Marino presented the treasurer’s report. As of Jun 27, the club has funds of $848.16.
There will be no further meetings of our club during the summer. As soon as speakers are finalized for the fall, an email notice will go out to all members.
The meeting was adjourned at 8:35 PM.
Respectfully submitted
