This is one of the most overlooked apps that comes free with a Mac. It is the one I use most.

I use it as a jotter, notepad app lots, but the main reason I use it is because most of my work is now in the cloud - Google Apps, the school/cluster website etc.

When you need to copy/paste text onto web pages it inevitably looks awful when it comes from Pages/Word/Open Office etc. So I always:

• Paste it into Text Edit

• Go to Format Menu > Make Plain Text

• Copy from there > Paste into online web page and

• Voila! Clean text that is easy to format and will behave how you expect it to.

Snagging the icon of an app when you need to use it in a document (like I did above to show the Text Edit icon)

• • • • Open the Application folder in the Finder.

      • Right Click (control click) on the App icon eg Text Edit

      • Select "Copy Text Edit"

      • Launch Preview and either

        • go to File >‚ New From Clipboard or

        • press Command+N

      • You should now see the Text Edit icon in five different sizes

      • Choose the size you want and >Save As > jpeg etc
