Leading the learning
Direct Instruction
The learning intention for this lesson was to think critically about information. The topic requires the learners to start thinking critically about adverts, and advertising. It also requires them to read multiple texts and make informed decisions based on what they read. The two 'fitness watch' texts were intentionally set up to cause conflict. Even though this is a reading session, this video shows a whole class lesson. Sometimes whole class lessons can be a good way to recap learning and keep everyone on the same page. After this I went on to see each group individually.
Reflection/ Next steps
This lesson works really well at teaching learners to be critical about what they read. It provides a very obvious need to read multiple texts, and why this is important. If they had only read the advertisements for the watches, and not the reviews, then they would have had different opinions on the watches because the reviews reveal new information that effects which watch is superior. This worked well to further understand the idea of why sponsors use athletes to advertise their products.
